Fandom Mashup #101

Fandom Mashups
Fandom Mashups is an original feature here at Lunar Rainbows Reviews.  Every week, I propose a unique fictional scenario and then we build our own personal dream team of five fictional characters from five different fandoms to complete the task!  Anyone is welcome to join up - all I ask is that you link back to me somewhere in your post :)

Hi friends!  Happy Sunday to you all! I was planning on a lazy Sunday as I'm still recovering from that stupid time-change...but it looks like relaxing will have to wait...

Back to the...Past! Pick a time period in history that you'd most like to visit and 5 characters you'd most like to spend that adventure with!

Naturally I'm not only picking 5 characters but 5 different time periods. What can I say, I'm a time-lord ;)

Ancient Egypt with The Doctor

Naturally. I almost just picked 5 different time periods and ONE character, being the Doctor but I stopped myself. My favorite time period is ancient Egypt and visiting THAT time with the Tenth Doctor would be a dream come true ♥

Victorian London with Sherlock

If Ancient Egypt is my favorite time period, my second favorite is Victorian London and what better character to explore it with than Sherlock (and Watson) The episode of BBC's Sherlock set in Victorian London^^ was brilliant!

9th/10th Century Scotland with Harry Potter

I'd LOVE to time-travel with Harry Potter. Or do anything with Harry Potter really LOL! But imagine travelling back to the foundation of Hogwarts WITH Harry Potter himself ♥  Meeting Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin in the flesh and seeing Hogwarts being built!

The Roaring 20's with the Winchesters

The episode of Supernatural where Dean travels to the 40's is close - but Sam wasn't there (WTF?!) so I want to go full on Roaring 20's with Sam and Dean. We're going to need Castiel to zap us there so hopefully he'll join in too (and Crowley for good measure)

Camelot with Merlin (5th/6th Century Britain)

Look at that goofy smile!  Imagine exploring Camelot with a young Merlin!  Having him take you on the grand tour and getting into all kinds of trouble on the way....man, I really need to rewatch BBC's Merlin!

Where - and When - would you explore?
And Who with?

Harry Potter Moment #185

Harry Potter Moment of the Week
Harry Potter Moment of the Week was created by Leah @ Uncorked Thoughts  and is hosted here @ Lunar Rainbows Reviews. The idea is to share a favorite moment, magical item, character, spell, quote or memory  from the books, films or J.K.Rowling herself!  How to join up &  upcoming topics here.

Hello all! I hope the week has been treating you all well so far?  I'm still adjusting to the stupid time change so I've been tired but hey - it's nearly the weekend :D

Favorite Fanfic?

Embarrassing confession time: I've never read a single piece of Harry Potter fanfiction *gasp* The first time I finished the series, I just straight up dove back in and reread the entire series...and this repeated itself more times than I care to mention before I finally took a breather in between rereads to...you know...read something else >.<  I don't know, I just feel like I only ever wanted the real story, from JKR in my head and nothing else would ever compare.  A part of me does feel like I missed out on such a big part of the fandom but a bigger part of me still isn't willing to give fanfiction a go. In my defence, I don't do fanfic in general so it isn't just Potter, but I know Potter fanfic has defined so many Potterhead lives...#thestruggleisreal

What about you guys? fanfic: yay or nay?
What's your favorite Potter fanfic?

Waiting on Wednesday *141*

Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine in which we spotlight an upcoming book release we're especially looking forward to!

Here's my pick this week:

Oathbringer by Brandon Sanderson
The Stormlight Archive #3
Expected Publication: November 14th 2017 by Tor

In Oathbringer, the third volume of the New York Times bestselling Stormlight Archive, humanity faces a new Desolation with the return of the Voidbringers, a foe with numbers as great as their thirst for vengeance.

Dalinar Kholin's Alethi armies won a fleeting victory at a terrible cost: The enemy Parshendi summoned the violent Everstorm, which now sweeps the world with destruction, and in its passing awakens the once peaceful and subservient parshmen to the horror of their millennia-long enslavement by humans. While on a desperate flight to warn his family of the threat, Kaladin Stormblessed must come to grips with the fact that the newly kindled anger of the parshmen may be wholly justified.

Nestled in the mountains high above the storms, in the tower city of Urithiru, Shallan Davar investigates the wonders of the ancient stronghold of the Knights Radiant and unearths dark secrets lurking in its depths. And Dalinar realizes that his holy mission to unite his homeland of Alethkar was too narrow in scope. Unless all the nations of Roshar can put aside Dalinar's blood-soaked past and stand together--and unless Dalinar himself can confront that past--even the restoration of the Knights Radiant will not prevent the end of civilization.
OATHBRINGER!!! *heavy breathing* *internal screaming* We finally have a cover and it is GLORIOUS!  This series is easily my favorite high-fantasy series OF LIFE but the wait between the books is killer - for real - the last book came out in 2014 O.O  Honestly, the series is worth it though, it's my favorite Sanderson offering so far and that is saying something.  I know I still have to wait until November to get my greedy hands on this beast but I'm already counting down the days!

Where are my Stormlight Archive peeps?
What are you waiting on this week?

Hi all and happy Sunday!  Things are pretty serious today so let's get right to it:

A sadistic, power-hungry man has gained access to some sort of super-computer that would allow him to take over the world.  Luckily, the computer is currently encrypted but not for long. Who's going to help you stop him from accessing all that valuable information?

Artemis Fowl

This topic was kind of inspired by one of the Artemis Fowl books so I definitely had him in mind from the start. Artemis is a boy-genius and he's ruthless to boot so he'll take care of this moron in no time flat!

Felicity Smoak

In case Artie runs into trouble, there's always Felicity!  She's a computer genius in her own right and she'd make a valuable addition to this ensemble. Plus, #girlcrush alert!

Batman

Bruce Wayne has the know-how to help us identify and locate our bad guy and Batman has the resources to find him and....change his mind XD

Sam Winchester

Sammy is experienced in research and computers which makes him a prime candidate here. Once we figure out a plan, Sam's also got the mojo to go on the attack and take care of things.

Cisco Ramon

Another computer whiz I know, but I think Felicity and Cisco work really well together and they double our chance of success!  Plus Cisco will provide some much needed comic relief within our band of serious heroes.

Which geniuses would be on your team?

Hi Potter-heads!  Happy almost weekend!  I hope everyone's week is going along well so far?  For Potter-Thursday we're talking about film casting:

Which cast member from the films do you think was the most perfect fit for the character they portrayed?

Well, I've made no secrets about the fact that I adore Richard Harris as Dumbledore.  He was a bit older in the films than I'd pictured Dumbledore but nevertheless, he was the perfect Dumbledore for me.  Maggie Smith of course is an absolutely phenomenal Minerva McGonagall as well.  And we all know that Evanna Lynch basically IS Luna Lovegood - even JKR said so!  I'd say that all of them^^ are a perfect fit for the characters they portray but I think the most perfect example of stellar casting in these films is:

Alan Rickman as Severus Snape

Now I'm not a Snape-fangirl and as much as I'm obsessed with all things Potter, I don't go around reblogging stuff that has 'Always' on it - nothing against anyone that does of course - I've just never felt that Snape was fully redeemed for his terrible actions. But this isn't a post about Snape's bullying, nor is it a post about his astounding bravery. The bottom line that everyone can agree on is that Snape is a complex character.  He keeps you guessing until the last second and even when all is revealed, he remains a shade of gray entity with lots of layers. Only a truly gifted actor could have pulled that off the way Alan Rickman did.  The bottom line is that Rickman's portrayal of Severus Snape will forever live on as one of the best book-to-film representations ever.

Which actor do you think best became his character?

Hey everyone and happy Sunday! It might be freezing cold where I'm at right now but it's ok because I'm going travelling:

You're heading out on a travelling adventure to explore the world. Pick 5 destinations on your bucket list and 1 character to hit up each destination with!

Scotland with Harry Potter

Naturally.  I want to backpack through the fields of Scotland until I find Hogwarts...and then I will never, ever, leave.

The Universe with The Doctor

All of the Universe isn't too much to ask is it?  And we would have all the time in the world do travel anyway (TimeLord)

London with Sherlock

Granted, I doubt Sherlock would be a good tour guide - being a know-it-all and whatnot - but if John comes along it should be fun!

Gotham with Batman

Sure Gotham is scary AF but with The Dark Knight by my side I'd be ok. So long as he keeps to the top of high buildings...

Across the U.S. with the Winchesters

Yup. I want a continental road trip in the Impala with the boys!  I'm hoping Castiel might pop in a few times too (literally)

*Bonus

Henrietta with The Raven Boys + Blue

Let's find that magical forest! And if all else fails, let's have pizza at Nino's and then get our cards read at 300 Fox Way!

What locations would you visit? And with who?

Review: Mostly Harmless

Mostly Harmless by Douglas Adams
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy #5
Published October 13th 1992 by Harmony

It’s easy to get disheartened when your planet has been blown up, the woman you love has vanished due to a misunderstanding about space/time, the spaceship you are on crashes on a remote and Bob-fearing planet, and all you have to fall back on are a few simple sandwich-making skills. However, instead of being disheartened, Arthur Dent makes the terrible mistake of starting to enjoy life a bit–and immediately all hell breaks loose.

Hell takes a number of forms: there’s the standard Ford Prefect version, in the shape of an all-new edition of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and a totally unexpected manifestation in the form of a teenage girl who startles Arthur Dent by being his daughter when he didn’t even know he had one.

Can Arthur save the Earth from total multidimensional obliteration? Can he save the Guide from a hostile alien takeover? Can he save his daughter, Random, from herself? Of course not. He never works out exactly what is going on. Will you?
Mostly Harmless is the final book of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Series (as written by Douglas Adams) and the last book Adams ever wrote before his passing. Adams himself admitted that he was in a weird place when he wrote this book and acknowledged that it was indeed a bleaker offering than the previous books in the series. He fully intended to write a 6th book to correct ''his mistakes'' with this book but he passed away before he could do so.  Eventually, his ideas for the 6th book were brought to fruition via Eoin Colfer (famed author of the Artemis Fowl Series)...but more on that later...

So Mostly Harmless reunites us with Arthur, Ford and Trillian, some time after the events of the previous book. Though each of them has gone their separate ways prior, they all end up being reunited eventually through the usual random series of events. Yes the randomness of these books is part of what makes them great and I'm happy to say that there was a lot more random things going on here.  Unfortunately, another part of what makes this series great is the humor and I'm sorry to say that this instalment was severely lacking in humor, compared to the rest of the series. Like, it was not funny at all, which is sad considering how the other instalments all made me laugh out loud multiple times throughout.  I did love the bit about Elvis a whole lot, it was lovely and entertaining though it still lacked the general lightness and humor that I've grown accustomed to as a read through this series.

There was also a new character introduced. I won't delve into spoilers but I will say that her name is Random and despite that promising and fitting name, I did not like her at all. I wish I had but she was annoying, shrill and just plain unlikeable.  That, paired with the lack of humor and general desolate feel of this book was fairly disappointing to me. If ever I reread the series, I'll be sticking to books 1-4 and hopefully I'll eventually forget most of this one.

All things considered, Mostly Harmless was...ok. I did enjoy the first part of Arthur's story, Ford's bits were entertaining and that bit about Elvis that I mentioned was certainly memorable - it made the read worthwhile for me - but other than that, this book simply doesn't match up to the rest of the series. As for the 6th book penned by Colfer, though I'm curious about it, the reception for it wasn't great so I'm not sure when I'll read it. In any case, it isn't currently available on audio through my library, so I doubt I'll be reading it anytime soon.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy as a whole though is a series that's definitely worth checking out. Books 1-4 were a bit hit with me and I thoroughly enjoyed reading through this classic sci-fi series. I definitely recommend the audio versions of these as well - they were so much fun :)

Harry Potter Moment #183

Harry Potter Moment of the Week
Harry Potter Moment of the Week was created by Leah @ Uncorked Thoughts  and is hosted here @ Lunar Rainbows Reviews. The idea is to share a favorite moment, magical item, character, spell, quote or memory  from the books, films or J.K.Rowling herself!  How to join up &  upcoming topics here.

Hello all!  How is everyone's week going? Well, I'm turning a year older tomorrow so there's that. Getting older is always sort of surreal to me because I still feel (and act) so young sometimes, but really I'm not actually that young anymore  >.< Anyway, I'm technically the same age that adult Harry Potter will be this July and naturally, that's a great source of comfort to me ♥

If you could change one thing from book 5, what would it be?

I think that at this point we all know I worship JKR - she can do no wrong in my eyes.  As much as I despise the introduction Umbridge in Order of the Phoenix, I understand why she needed to be introduced and why she needed to be the way she was.  There is one small thing that I would change in book 5 though:
Grawp

Forgive me, but I just don't get the point of Grawp.  I mean, yeah it's nice that Hagrid has a relative and all but I don't really see the purpose of introducing Grawp here only for him to be forgotten until the very climax of DH.  I'm sure Hermione and Harry could have figured out another way to lure Umbridge into the forest for that EPIC scene with the Centaurs without Grawp being in this story at all.  Honestly though? I can't help it: Grawp kind of bugs me.  I could definitely do without him.

Would you change anything about Order of the Phoenix?

Fandom Mashup #94

Fandom Mashups
Fandom Mashups is an original feature here at Lunar Rainbows Reviews.  Every week, I propose a unique fictional scenario and then we build our own personal dream team of five fictional characters from five different fandoms to complete the task!  Anyone is welcome to join up - all I ask is that you link back to me somewhere in your post :)

Hi everyone!  Happy Sunday Funday!  It's freezing again in my part of the globe, I usually go for a walk or a hike on Sundays but I'm skipping it this week.  That's ok though because we've got something to celebrate today anyway:

You have a birthday coming up and you want to celebrate in your-style.  What kind of celebration are you having and which fictional characters are celebrating with you?

This week's topic will feature most of the usual suspects because my birthday means my rules right?  If I could celebrate with my favorite fictional characters, I'd want a low-key night in of talking, laughing and bonding.  Not surprisingly, here's who I'd spend the day/night with:

Harry Potter

You all saw this one coming. My favorite character of all time is obviously my top pick. My dream is basically to sit down with Harry and talk for DAYS. I'd love it if he brought the rest of the trios of course (both the gold trio and the silver trio) not to mention Sirius, Remus, McGonagall, Dumbledore and the rest of the Weasleys!

The Doctor

The Doctor is another obvious pick for me, especially Ten. Mind, I'd LOVE to meet Nine, The War Doctor, Twelve, Eight and yes even Eleven but Ten is MY Doctor (and my crush) so that's that. Imagine chatting with the Doctor over tea ♥ Imagine the stories!

Bruce Wayne

While this particular Bruce Wayne^^ is another crush of mine, I'm just really into The Dark Knight in general. I'd love to watch him 'do' Bruce Wayne KNOWING that he's Batman! I'd be endlessly entertained. I'm also hoping he'll host the party and foot the bill for our tea and snacks LOL! Hopefully he doesn't leave as soon as the sun goes down though...

Sherlock Holmes + John Watson

I know the Fandom Mashup rules specify 1 character from 1 fandom but if it's my birthday, I'm breaking some rules!  Seeing Sherlock and John interact together would make my life! I'll just have to make sure there's plenty of tea...and popcorn!

The Winchesters + Castiel

Speaking of rule breaking...as well as being endlessly entertained^^  Yeah.  I want to watch this trio just be normal for a day/night and see what happens. I'm also hoping Crowley will pop up at some point to snark at them (and all of us) so it'll be perfect :D

The Raven Boys + Blue
source

I need this entire group together, I'm not going to lie. Their friendship is the air that I breathe and having them with me to celebrate my birthday would mean everything.  PYNCH! Ronan's sass and fucking swearing. Gansey's imagination. Noah's sweetness. Blue just being awesome. Yes. please.

Aelin Galathynius

My party is now complete!  Aelin should make an entrance worthy of Batman and then strutt in and blend into our group seamlessly. I'm thinking girl talk with her, Blue, Ginny and Hermione is on the agenda at some point with copious amounts of ice-cream :)

Which fictional characters would you want to celebrate your birthday with?

Harry Potter Moment #182

Harry Potter Moment of the Week
Harry Potter Moment of the Week was created by Leah @ Uncorked Thoughts  and is hosted here @ Lunar Rainbows Reviews. The idea is to share a favorite moment, magical item, character, spell, quote or memory  from the books, films or J.K.Rowling herself!  How to join up &  upcoming topics here.

Hi hi!  How is everyone today? I'm fantastic because today we're doing my favorite kind of topic: book recs for Harry Potter characters!  And the best bit is that we're doing one of my all-time favorite characters this week :D

Which books would you recommend to Sirius?

The Way of Kings - I picture Sirius becoming really invested in Kaladin in this series. Kaladin was unjustly made a slave and payed dearly for something that wasn't his fault. Kaladin,s return to glory is nothing short of epic and I think Sirius would be right there rooting for him every step of the way!

The Lord of the Rings - For some reason, I think that Sirius and Aragorn would quite like each other. They're both rebels who fight against evil at all costs. If Sirius had gotten a chance, I think he could have turned into an Aragorn-type leader as well ♥

Shades of Magic - I feel like Kell would be endlessly entertaining to Sirius. The nobility that doesn't quite fit in with the rest, the light thievery and the magic of course! Yup, I think Sirius would be all over this series.

The Hunger Games - A story that revolves around a rebellion? That's like Sirius' bread and butter.  I think that Sirius would get a kick out of Haymitch for sure and he'd rally behind Katniss just like the rest of us did.

Which books would you recommend to Sirius?

Waiting on Wednesday *140*

Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine in which we spotlight an upcoming book release we're especially looking forward to!

Here's my pick this week:

A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas
A Court of Thorns and Roses #3
Expected Publication: May 2nd 2017 by Bloomsbury

Looming war threatens all Feyre holds dear in the third volume of the #1 New York Times bestselling A Court of Thorns and Roses series.

Feyre has returned to the Spring Court, determined to gather information on Tamlin's maneuverings and the invading king threatening to bring Prythian to its knees. But to do so she must play a deadly game of deceit-and one slip may spell doom not only for Feyre, but for her world as well.

As war bears down upon them all, Feyre must decide who to trust amongst the dazzling and lethal High Lords-and hunt for allies in unexpected places.

In this thrilling third book in the #1 New York Times bestselling series from Sarah J. Maas, the earth will be painted red as mighty armies grapple for power over the one thing that could destroy them all.
Here's proof that my reading/blogging slump has had lasting effects: I didn't post this as my WoW the second the cover came out. o_O Sigh. Nevertheless, I'm beyond excited to get my grubby little hands on ACOWAR because after the ending of EoS - THE book that kicked off my reading slump - I'm looking to Maas to bring me back to life.  I know that we'll all likely suffer emotional despair with this book as well but I'm hoping for some sort of happy ending here. Time will tell if that ending will happen but with May closer than ever, we'll have our answers soon. And then we'll likely all be in therapy *sob* LOL!

Thoughts on ACOWAR, the series and/or Maas?
What are you waiting on this week?
