Harry Potter IS the Gateway Fandom

For a lot of readers, Harry Potter was the fandom that launched it all!  It opened the door to a passion for reading (if we didn't have it already), a deep love for the fantasy genre at large but more importantly, it turned a great number of people into fanboys/fangirls for life.

I was always a geek, even as far back as I can remember as a kid and I tend to get obsessed with the things I love. Apparently it's an introvert thing

Nevertheless, that's just the way I am.  There is no middle ground and that seems to go hand in hand with being a bookish person or just plain being an introvert. The bottom line is:

Looking back, I'd say that my first official fandom was Batman, though I didn't know I was in a fandom back then. I was in my early teens and that lasted into my late teens.  Then I hit University and like many of you know, reading took the backseat. So I guess my fangirl self did too. And then I graduated and had time to read again...so Harry Potter happened. That was my first book fandom and my first foray into high-fantasy books.  I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say that it altered my very existence. Because of it, I joined countless other fandoms like Hunger Games, Lord of the Rings, The Old Kingdom, The Raven Cycle, Brandon Sanderson, Sarah J. Maas...(yes those last two authors get their own fandom spot since I love everything they write.

Doctor Who was a big one in terms of fandoms and  I wouldn't have gotten into if I hadn't seen David Tennant in a Harry Potter movie and then recognised him from ALL the fandom things on Pinterest. Doctor Who led me to Sherlock, Merlin, Supernatural, Arrow, The Flash...the list goes on.

But Harry Potter started it all for me. It's like my life is divided into ''Before Potter'' (or B.P) and After Potter (A.P.) I never knew then fandom life until a bespectacled, green eyed boy with a lightning scar walked into my life bursting with magic. And once he showed up, my life was never the same. It was magic. And you know what?

Was Harry Potter the Gateway Fandom for you?
If not, what fandom started it all for you?

  1. Cool post! I think HP WAS the gateway for lots of people, and maybe Hunger Games too? For me I don't know- maybe Lord of the Rings? Or star Wars. Yeah probably that one. :)

  3. This post is really nice. :) I love reading about your gateway in Harry Potter. It does really seem like a segmented life Before Potter and After Potter. lol Though, for me, I was so young I don't really remember much BP. I can't even imagine who I would have turned out to be if I hadn't read Harry Potter. Maybe I would have picked it up later, but maybe not. HP was definitely my gateway to the fandom world, and other people who love things as passionately I as do.

  4. My gateway fandom was Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It was the first thing that I got into that was just MINE and I obsessed. After that I got into paranormal fiction and from there I found most of my YA books which eventually included HP.
