Harry Potter Moment #184

Harry Potter Moment of the Week
Harry Potter Moment of the Week was created by Leah @ Uncorked Thoughts  and is hosted here @ Lunar Rainbows Reviews. The idea is to share a favorite moment, magical item, character, spell, quote or memory  from the books, films or J.K.Rowling herself!  How to join up &  upcoming topics here.

Hi Potter-heads!  Happy almost weekend!  I hope everyone's week is going along well so far?  For Potter-Thursday we're talking about film casting:

Which cast member from the films do you think was the most perfect fit for the character they portrayed?

Well, I've made no secrets about the fact that I adore Richard Harris as Dumbledore.  He was a bit older in the films than I'd pictured Dumbledore but nevertheless, he was the perfect Dumbledore for me.  Maggie Smith of course is an absolutely phenomenal Minerva McGonagall as well.  And we all know that Evanna Lynch basically IS Luna Lovegood - even JKR said so!  I'd say that all of them^^ are a perfect fit for the characters they portray but I think the most perfect example of stellar casting in these films is:

Alan Rickman as Severus Snape

Now I'm not a Snape-fangirl and as much as I'm obsessed with all things Potter, I don't go around reblogging stuff that has 'Always' on it - nothing against anyone that does of course - I've just never felt that Snape was fully redeemed for his terrible actions. But this isn't a post about Snape's bullying, nor is it a post about his astounding bravery. The bottom line that everyone can agree on is that Snape is a complex character.  He keeps you guessing until the last second and even when all is revealed, he remains a shade of gray entity with lots of layers. Only a truly gifted actor could have pulled that off the way Alan Rickman did.  The bottom line is that Rickman's portrayal of Severus Snape will forever live on as one of the best book-to-film representations ever.

Which actor do you think best became his character?

  1. Agreed! I thought Evanna Lynch did such an amazing job as Luna and she was one of my favorite characters so I feel like I was very critical of how she was portrayed. Maggie Smith was one of my choices so I definitely agree with that one. I don't know how I missed Alan Rickman though. I was a huge fan of his before he was in the Harry Potter series, and he truly worked magic with Snape's character. Yes, fan of his or not, he brought him to life so well. I do love Snape, but I love him as a neither all good and neither all bad character. You're so right, I do not have many complaints at all when it comes to the casting of these films.

    1. I agree Evanna Lynch did such a wonderful job with Luna. I especially love the unique circumstances that led to her playing the part. ❤️ There are so many cast members who were so perfect!

  2. Alan Rickman was phenomenal and probably the perfect casting for that role? He does sound like a wonderfully gray character, and who better than Rickman?

  3. I am so with you on this! I am the furthest thing from a Snape fan and I will go on and on about all my reasons why... I even got into an argument at Harry Potter world with one of the employees there over this.... but I do admit that Alan Rickman did a wonderful job portraying Snape.

  4. I agree Alan Rickman was brilliant as Snape. Also I'm so, so sad he won't be able to allow his prediction of reading Harry Potter at 80 come true. 😭 I think Dame Maggie was the most perfect though. She really MADE that role!

  5. I absolutely LOVED Alan Rickman in Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, where he played a much more heroic character, lol, and I think that amazing versatility he had as an actor really, really shone in DH2 when Harry viewed Snape's memories in the Pensieve. Adore Maggie Smith's McGonagall and Evanna Lynch's Luna, too, and OF COURSE Richard Harris's Dumbledore. ♥

  6. If I had to choose just one I think I would choose Maggie Smith as Minerva McGonagall. She was perfect and the scene in the last movie where she says "I've always wanted to use that spell" is one of my favorites. Your pick is great as well, I'm not a big fan of Snape but Alan Rickman was such a great actor and he played that role brilliantly.

  7. I admit I haven't seen the last two films yet, but I agree that Rickman was one of the BEST casting choices for the show. I also really love Gary Oldman as Sirius and Maggie Smith as McGonagall. <3

I LOVE comments & do my best to return every one a.s.a.p. ♥
