Harry Potter Moment #177

Harry Potter Moment of the Week
Harry Potter Moment of the Week was created by Leah @ Uncorked Thoughts  and is hosted here @ Lunar Rainbows Reviews. The idea is to share a favorite moment, magical item, character, spell, quote or memory  from the books, films or J.K.Rowling herself!  How to join up &  upcoming topics here.

Hi friends! Happy Thursday!  I hope you've been having a lovely week so far :)  Our topic today is all about the films - namely - casting preferences:

Which character do you think should have been played by a different actor?

Well, sorry for being obvious but I'm going to have to go with Albus Dumbledore. I adored Richard Harris, even though he was a bit older than Dumbledore would have been in the books. He had the perfect calm power that radiated through him to go along with that elusive twinkle in his eyes when he was feeling mischievous.  I wish he could have lived through the entire Potter-franchise but that's a selfish wish and I know it.  The worst bit of all of this to me, is the fact that the producers recasted Dumbledore with Michael Gambon. I've made no secret that I do NOT enjoy his portrayal of Dumbledore. Not one bit.  Beyond Gambon himself admitting to never having read the Harry Potter books *cringe* he clearly had no true grasp of the essence of the character himself - something I think the producers, directors, casting agents, ANYONE, should have filled him in on. Dumbledore does not yell. He doesn't spit. He doesn't run around like a crazy person shoving people. Sigh.

I wish that Dumbledore could have been taken up by Peter O'Toole, who was a close personal friend of Harris and whom Harris' family suggested as a replacement for Harris.  Peter O'Toole not only resembles Richard Harris, but he has the gravitas to pull off a character as complex as Albus Dumbledore - beyond the fact that both Harris and O'Toole have that silly sense of humor that is so perfectly Dumbledore-ish :) See these two silly goofballs in action for yourselves:

Which character do you wish had been played by another actor?

  1. Guuuurl... lol. Love that! Haven't seen the movies other than the first one but I will say O'Toole seems like he would have beena great replacement!

  2. Heh, yeah. I didn't mind Michael Gambon's spirited take on Dumbledore for the most part, but some of his scenes were definitely cringe! I would also recast Ginny (don't hate me). But then again, I don't know how much of the actors' roles were their takes or the writing or the direction, etc.

  3. Very good choice! The fact that Gambon never bothered reading the books is kind of awful, and I don't understand why he couldn't be bothered to research the character he was playing. I'd've liked to have seen Harry's parents played by different people. I know they're not in it much, but the actors playing his parents are too old; Lily and James were only 21 when they died, and I think having two 21 year olds playing them would have reminded us how heartbreaking it is that they died so young.

  4. The Gambon Dumbledore pic - LOLOLOL! Richard Harris totally nailed the twinkle in Dumbledore's eyes, something that sadly was missing from Gambon's performance. It would've been very interesting to have seen Peter O'Toole in the role and especially in the whole "Harry did you put your name in the Goblet of Fire?" scene, LOL!
