Harry Potter Moment #208

Harry Potter Moment of the Week
Harry Potter Moment of the Week was created by Leah @ Uncorked Thoughts  and is hosted here @ Lunar Rainbows Reviews. The idea is to share a favorite moment, magical item, character, spell, quote or memory  from the books, films or J.K.Rowling herself!  How to join up &  upcoming topics here.

Happy Potter-Thursday all!! I just realized I never posted last week, so I'm going to  go ahead and post last week's topic today and hopefully catch up with this week's topic in a few:

Which character confused you the most through the series?

Is it a cop-out if I go with Dumbledore? I mean, I'm pretty sure he was supposed to confuse us - he sure as shit confused Harry on a regular basis!  It's not like I ever wondered if he was bad or anything (MAN, THAT would have been a twist!) but his motives always held more than what we were led to believe. Was he protecting Harry? Was he training him up to face Voldemort? Which did he care more about, the protecting or the training? He certainly always had riddles and guessing games for Harry to play. And whenever he did reveal information, he always held the most important stuff back.  To me it was always clear that he knew more than he was letting on and the constant guessing about whatever secret he was holding on to kept me confused through most of the books.

I still love the man though and no one will convince me otherwise.  If Harry was 'Dumbledore's man through and through' well that's good enough for me.  Sure I might have wanted some things to go down differently from what they did but I know Dumbledore cared for Harry and tried to do what was best - at the same time. He walked a tight line but he did it better than any of us would have.

So tell me: what character confused you the most in the series?

Fandom Mashup #123

Fandom Mashups
Fandom Mashups is an original feature here at Lunar Rainbows Reviews.  Every week, I propose a unique fictional scenario and then we build our own personal dream team of five fictional characters from five different fandoms to complete the task!  Anyone is welcome to join up - all I ask is that you link back to me somewhere in your post :)

Hey everyone!  I wish you all a good start to the last week in August! Whaaa?!  Where did the time go!  Well we might as well finish of August with a bang as as Slyther In to September...get it?! #lamejokeislame

"Slytherin will help you on your way to greatness" - Choose 5 characters from different fandoms that you think would do well in Slytherin.

Celaena Sardothien

Celaena at the start of her story in ToG strikes me very much as a Slytherin.  She's cunning af and she's ambitious!  She also takes care of her loved ones as best she can which makes her an ideal candidate for the House.

Dean Winchester

Now it can be said that both Winchester brothers are brave and therefore Gryffindors but I've always pegged Dean as a Slytherin.  He's a crafty bastard and he would do anything, anything to protect his family -especially Sam.

Mycroft Holmes

Mycroft could easily be a Ravenclaw but I don't see him fitting in there as well as his younger brother Sherlock.  And speaking of his brother, Mycroft would move heaven and earth for Sherlock so he would fit in nicely in Slytherin. He's also as cunning as they come and definitely ambitious - consider his job!

The Master

Again, I could see the Master in Ravenclaw of course but he's a crafty Timelord (aren't they all?!) It's more than that though: he's scheming and devious and sly. And the ambition he has to show to go after the Doctor time and time again? To me that makes him a perfect fit for the Slytherin House.

Adam Parrish

Adam Parrish (who by the way looks nothing like this in my head^^) was sorted by author Maggie Stiefvater herself into Slytherin House.  He's certainly ambitious enough to fit the bill.  Also? As PYNCH he and Ronan make up a Slytherin/Gryffindor romance and that's just brilliant!

What characters from other fandoms would YOU sort into Slytherin?

PS: This is the last topic listed for my Fandom Mashup feature and with work, buying a house, moving, buying a car...etc. I haven't been blog-planning properly so I'm going to put the feature on hold for a bit. Honestly, I'm still in a reading slump but I'm hoping Fall will help me start reading again and get this blog back to what it used to be. Thank you for understanding ♥

Harry Potter Moment #206

Harry Potter Moment of the Week

Hi everyone and happy Potter Thursday!  I hope you're all well and ready to dive right into the Wizarding World with me?  Ok! Let's go  :

Would you have joined the Slug Club?

Hmmm, I guess that should read: Would you have been asked to join the Slug Club?  But anyway. I think the only way I would have been asked to join is if I had been the same geek at Hogwarts that I am in real life. And the answer to that is that I would be even more of a geek. Presumably, I'd be Muggle Born and being told I'm magic would have made me want to DEVOUR all the magical knowledge just like Hermione. So yeah, maybe I would have been clever enough at Hogwarts to warrant an invite from the old Slug himself!

As to if I would have joined...well Harry Potter joined, so I'm in!  Call me Colin Creevy because I would be following The Boy Who Lived like a shadow.  I picture the Slug Club as just another chance to bask in his glory LOL!

Do you think you would have been worthy of a Slug Club invitation?

Hi everyone and happy Monday -wait - is that an oxymoron for most of you? I'm off Mondays because I work Saturdays but anyway: I hope this Monday will be pain free for you all!  Anyone watching the Eclipse where you're at?  It's visible here but I don't have any viewing glasses...might see if I can craft some up lol.  Anyways, speaking of Intergalactic things:

Last week's Intergalactic Villains have finally reached us and the Earth needs DEFENDING. Which heroes are leading the pack to save Humanity?

The Doctor

These villains are coming FROM space to attack Earth...so naturally My Doctor makes the top of this list!  I feel safer just looking at that face. ♥.♥

Thor

THOR!  Look at him, all ready to go with a fierce sneer and his hammer aloft!  Those villains don't stand a chance!

Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange is no...stranger to dealing with other-worldly forces threatening Earth. I have complete faith in him to put our collection of bad guys in their place.

Wonder Woman

Two Marvel Heros from this DC-fan. I gotta represent! Cue Wonder Woman.  She's better suited for this particular task than my perennial favorite Batman and we all know she's up to the task.

Spock

Last but not least: Spock. His cool intellect should mesh perfectly with The Doctor and both of them are just as brave as the rest of the team here...we got this!

Which heroes would you team up to fight our Intergalactic Villains?

Happy...Saturday all! How is everyone's week going so far?  I've had a busy week in real life and work was exceptionally busy so I'm ready to step back into the Wizarding World (albeit a few days late), how about you?  I've got Founder Fever recently it seems:

Favorite Hogwarts Founder. Or whichever one fascinates you the most.

As I mentioned in last week's post, I'm fascinated by the Founders of Hogwarts. All of them.  I feel like history maybe exaggerated some of their character traits and I'd like to see the humans behind the Houses.  Or you know, maybe history didn't over-emphasize anything...either way, I'd love to find out all about each one of the Founders.  We have certainly learned more about Godric Gryffindor than any of the others. I'd follow that closely by Salazar Slytherin so if pressed, I'd say I want to learn more about the women Founders of Hogwarts because they have more mystery about them.  I think Rowena Ravenclaw seems brilliant of course but as a GryffinPuff, I think Helga Hufflepuff would be my top choice! I adore how inclusively she saw the Wizarding World, how she wanted all the Magical children to be welcome so long as they worked hard and wanted to learn ♥

Which one of the Hogwarts Founders are you more interested in?

Hi and happy Monday everyone.  It seems like at least for the Summer, it's easier for me to post my FM posts on Monday so we'll try it this way for a bit and see how it goes:

An evil Galactic Empire is seeking to rule all the Galaxies (sound familiar?) and has lined up our Galaxy - and Earth - as it's next target. Which villains are running this diabolical scheme?

Chancellor Palpatine

Obviously right? This topic just reeks of Chancellor Palpatine!  Odds are he's the mastermind behind this entire scheme!

The Master

Speaking of Mastermind...The Master would be all over this like a bad joke. Or a good joke cause you have to admit The Master is pretty funny XD

Moriarty

Moriarty would fit right in here too, he's all about schemes and plots so it'd be nothing for him to take his ideals on a Galactic level!

Lucifer

Lucifer teaming up with The Master in Moriarty would be EPIC for sure!  I just wonder how they'd all get along?

Saruman

Saruman would be all up in this too!  Of course he'd pretend he wouldn't be but if the past in any indication, he's lying his white beard off.

Who do you think would take part in an evil, Galactic takeover?

Harry Potter Moment #204

Harry Potter Moment of the Week

Happy Thursday all! I hope that you're all having a nice week so far?  I can't believe that it's already the 2nd week of August but that's another thing altogether. Soon we'll be packing up for our return to Hogwarts ;)  but in the meantime:

If you could go back in time through the series, at what point would you go to first?

Oh gosh! So many possibilities! Obviously, I want to track through Harry Potter's life from start to finish!  And see whatever happens to Dumbledore, Voldemort, The Marauders and Lily Evans and all of the people who shaped Harry in some way but I think that first of all, I'd track back to the Founders of Hogwarts. I'd love to get to know them and see how their personalities shaped their own Houses and the School as a whole!  So I'd definitely start there and work my way forwards in time.

To meet the 4 Founders of Hogwarts and watch them interact with each other and witness the creation of the best Wizarding School ever would be a dream come true!

What point would you time-travel to in the Wizarding World's history?

Hi everyone!  It looks like Sunday posting isn't quite working for me at the moment.  I ended up going river-tubing again last Sunday and what with the long weekend here in Canada, well...you know the rest. I'm considering putting these posts up another day of the week but for the time being:

A night a magical fireworks is on the agenda tonight!  Which characters do you think would get a bigger kick out of tagging along?

Fred and George

We can't have 'magical fireworks' without Fred and George now can we? Their magical fireworks were quite memorable so I think they'd have fun plotting out more!

Sabriel

As the Abhorsen (a good Necromancer), Sabriel is all about nighttime activities but I think that a nice fireworks display would make for a nice change for her...you know, instead of chasing the undead.

The Doctor

The Doctor is all about whimsy and magical things so I'd love to see him enjoying a good fireworks show! I'm sure he's seen some otherworldly ones but with our team here, there should be an impressive display :)

Gandalf

Gandalf is a godfather of magical fireworks so obviously his name is written all over this topic! He'll make sure we get a light show to be remembered...so long as no mischievous hobbits interfere LOL!

Blue Sargent

And Blue just strikes me as someone who would really appreciate a good firework display. She'd just set herself up comfortably, chill and enjoy!  She's more than welcome to bring her Raven Boys with her of course ;)

Which character do you think would enjoy some fireworks?

Harry Potter Moment #203

Harry Potter Moment of the Week
Harry Potter Moment of the Week was created by Leah @ Uncorked Thoughts  and is hosted here @ Lunar Rainbows Reviews. The idea is to share a favorite moment, magical item, character, spell, quote or memory  from the books, films or J.K.Rowling herself!  How to join up &  upcoming topics here.

Hi everyone!  Happy Thursday! Well July certainly flew by didn't it? I hope everyone who participated in Harry Potter Month enjoyed themselves! I was far from organized compared to previous years but I still had so much fun posting and commenting on everyone's posts :D  Next year should be back to normal on my end - I hope! So here's our topic this week:

If you could change one thing from book 6, what would it be?

Oh this is a tough one! Half Blood Prince is one of my favorite books in the series.  My first thought was to say THAT death at the end...but I understand why it needed to happen so I've made my peace with it. Kind of. More or less. Ok not really! Not at all.  Yes, it needed to happen but it doesn't mean I have to be ok with it, right?  Especially when you consider that this happened right before:

*Don't mind me, I'll just be in a corner, drowning in tears and feels*

So I guess I wouldn't truly change it if I could...but I still wish it didn't have to happen. Does that make sense?

What would you change it HBP?

Could there have been a different Chosen One?

Could there have been a different Chosen One?

I've been sitting on this post idea for nearly three years and I never got around to publishing, because 1. I wanted to be fair and impartial and 2. I didn't want to offend anyone who might not agree with my thought process.  Finally I just wrote it all up in a blur last week and decided to post today, for Harry Potter's Birthday.

Now for those of you who know me, you've likely already guessed my answer here^^ but I wanted to discuss it nonetheless LOL. I've often come across posts on the internet about how a lot of people think that Hermione for example could have done a much better job at defeating Voldemort than Harry did. Or how the Prophecy wasn't clear if The Chosen One would be Neville or Harry so this means that Neville could have been The Chosen One too.  And as Harry Potter's biggest fangirl, my automatic response is to get defensive, despite how much I adore and admire both Hermione and Neville. Given my knee-jerk response to the whole idea, I wanted to delve into it a bit more logically and also see what my fellow Potterheads think.

So let's start with the apparent favorite. Could Hermione have been the chosen one? Now I love Hermione to bits and I share a lot of similarities with her, as many nerds and bookish people do. Obviously I think she's brilliant, there's no denying that. She's capable, skilled and she knows every spell, jinx, hex, incantation known to wizards and witches. She's also undoubtedly brave so she possesses many of the traits that got Harry so far in his questing. BUT...(you knew there was a but coming up right?) But... you have to admit that she's somewhat closed minded. She's infallibly logical but at times her logic and lack of instinct can be a hindrance.  She refused to believe Malfoy was a Death Eater.  She refused to consider that there was a Horcrux hidden at Hogwarts. And most importantly, She refused to believe in the Deathly Hallows. Her logic inevitably got in the way of all the clues that Dumbledore left, or to mounting evidence to the contrary.

Beyond that, book Hermione specifically rarely wanted to take many of the risks that the trio needed to take, especially during her first 5 years at Hogwarts. She was always fighting against Harry's instinct and better judgement.  Don't get me wrong, Harry got a fair share of things wrong too - namely in suspecting Snape (then again who wouldn't have?) and in thinking Sirius was in the Department of Mysteries (again, after how many accurate visions he'd seen, who could blame the guy) but more often than not, Harry was right.  Hermione would not have gone after Quirrell. She would not have kept the Marauder's Map and therefore found out what she needed to know about Sirius. Hermione might have succeeded with the Triwizard's Tournament, but I doubt she could have handled Voldemort returning any better than Harry did. Hermione's refusal to believe that there was a Horcrux hidden at Hogwarts OR to believe in the Deathly Hallows at all would have meant game over for the quest...if she ever got that far to begin with. It was because of Harry that she went out on all those adventures. Granted she saved his butt more than once but she still wouldn't have even been there if not for him.

Now on to Neville. Could Neville have been the chosen one? Now Neville is a true hero, just like Hermione is. Neville is brave, selfless and a true Gryffindor. The bravery he showed in his first year, standing up to Harry, Ron and Hermione comes from himself and no one else can take credit for that. But people forget that Neville never would have found his bravery if Harry Potter hadn't been around. Harry, telling Neville that he was worth 10 Malfoys. Harry, standing up to Malfoy himself, not to mention Umbridge, Snape and Voldemort. Neville himself admitted to Harry that seeing Harry stand up to Umbridge and the like was inspiring and that's what made him stand up to the Carrows in DH. So had Neville been the Chosen One, who would have inspired him to go out and do what's necessary? We can't assume he would have gotten that inspiration otherwise. He needed Harry to bring out his inner heroism.

On the other hand, Neville's heroics are, in a way, more significant than Harry's. Harry was never truly afraid of much. Sure he felt fear, but it never really overcame him. Neville however, always seemed terrified whenever he took up something daring or dangerous.  For Neville to risk 1.fighting Malfoy, 2. training in the D.A., 3.Infiltrating the Ministry, while being so horribly frightened shows that while he feels fear strongly, he's inspired to overcome it. But there's no denying that Harry is the one to inspire him.

Now what of Ginny Weasley? I read an AU (don't ask me where, I can't remember) where Harry dies at Voldemort's hand in the Forest and Ginny is the one to face The Dark Lord in the end and defeat him. And do you know what?  I can actually see this happening -as much as it breaks my heart - because Ginny was possessed by Tom Riddle once before. She knows what she's up against more than anyone and the loss of Harry would certainly be motivation enough for her to step up (not that book Ginny needs help in that department). But the scenario resides on the fact that Harry does most of the legwork and when he dies, his Horcrux is destroyed too, so Ginny need only face the weakened Tom Riddle in the end. In this instance, Harry remains the Chosen One to me but Ginny certainly fills his shoes nicely.

So the bottom line is this for me: even if I try to approach this topic critically, I can still only imagine Harry Potter as the Chosen One. I'm sorry, I tried but I remain Harry Potter's ultimate fangirl. Some people see his character as a 'special snowflake' but I see him as a boy who knew love briefly as a child and then suffered incredible losses but through it all, he retains an inherent need to save his loved ones from further harm at the hand of Voldemort.  Harry is lucky yes, he has amazing friends that do indeed save his life.  But doesn't EVERY hero have those friends?  And don't those heroes remain THE one true hero despite that?  Harry Potter is the Chosen One. No other character could have been so brave and fearless. No one else went out of their way to learn skills that would protect them and the ones they loved. Harry purposefully sought out how to produce the Patronus Charm, and a host of other DADA spells. He was put in extreme situations and adapted to survive. Sometimes he was lucky, yes but through it all, Harry Potter remains the hero that Dumbledore knew him to be. That every single person who met him knew him to be. And no one will ever convince me otherwise #sorrynotsorry

That's just my 2 cents on the matter.  Now it's your turn! Tell me: do you think any other character could have been the Chosen One? Why/Why not? Even though I'm set in my answer doesn't mean you have to :)

Hi everyone!  Instead of offering up excuses why my FM post is late (again - I went river tubing yesterday and only got in at like 9pm) I'm just going to leave this here:

"Their daring, nerve and chivalry set Gryffindors apart" - Pick 5 characters from other fandoms that would be sorted as Gryffindors if they were at Hogwarts

Ronan Lynch

This one is kind of cheating since author Maggie Stiefvater sorted him for us but he's my favorite Raven Boy and he's in MY House so I couldn't leave him out ♥

Rose Tyler

My beloved Rose Tyler is as Gryffindor as they come - she's brave and selfless.  Sure The Doctor brought those traits out of her but they're HER nonetheless!

John Watson

I love me some John  Watson and if Sherlock is a Ravenclaw - which he obviously is - then Doctor Watson is a Gryffindor. He's a soldier and he's always looking for another adrenaline fix.

Sam Winchester

Both of the Winchesters have some Slytherin tendencies to them yes, but I think Sam has time and time again proved himself in terms of heroism, bravery and chivalry.

Kaladin Stormblessed

You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone as heroic and courageous as Kaladin. He's like an adult Harry Potter kind of guy from ancient times!

What characters from other fandoms would YOU sort into Gryffindor?

Harry Potter IS the Gateway Fandom

For a lot of readers, Harry Potter was the fandom that launched it all!  It opened the door to a passion for reading (if we didn't have it already), a deep love for the fantasy genre at large but more importantly, it turned a great number of people into fanboys/fangirls for life.

I was always a geek, even as far back as I can remember as a kid and I tend to get obsessed with the things I love. Apparently it's an introvert thing

Nevertheless, that's just the way I am.  There is no middle ground and that seems to go hand in hand with being a bookish person or just plain being an introvert. The bottom line is:

Looking back, I'd say that my first official fandom was Batman, though I didn't know I was in a fandom back then. I was in my early teens and that lasted into my late teens.  Then I hit University and like many of you know, reading took the backseat. So I guess my fangirl self did too. And then I graduated and had time to read again...so Harry Potter happened. That was my first book fandom and my first foray into high-fantasy books.  I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say that it altered my very existence. Because of it, I joined countless other fandoms like Hunger Games, Lord of the Rings, The Old Kingdom, The Raven Cycle, Brandon Sanderson, Sarah J. Maas...(yes those last two authors get their own fandom spot since I love everything they write.

Doctor Who was a big one in terms of fandoms and  I wouldn't have gotten into if I hadn't seen David Tennant in a Harry Potter movie and then recognised him from ALL the fandom things on Pinterest. Doctor Who led me to Sherlock, Merlin, Supernatural, Arrow, The Flash...the list goes on.

But Harry Potter started it all for me. It's like my life is divided into ''Before Potter'' (or B.P) and After Potter (A.P.) I never knew then fandom life until a bespectacled, green eyed boy with a lightning scar walked into my life bursting with magic. And once he showed up, my life was never the same. It was magic. And you know what?

Was Harry Potter the Gateway Fandom for you?
If not, what fandom started it all for you?

Harry Potter Moment #202

Harry Potter Moment of the Week
Harry Potter Moment of the Week was created by Leah @ Uncorked Thoughts  and is hosted here @ Lunar Rainbows Reviews. The idea is to share a favorite moment, magical item, character, spell, quote or memory  from the books, films or J.K.Rowling herself!  How to join up &  upcoming topics here.

Happy Potter Thursday All!  Today we've got one of my favorite topics where we recommend books to characters from the Wizarding World! And I'm even more excited today because we're recommending reads for my beloved Remus Lupin ♥

Which books would you recommend to Lupin?

The Wolves of Mercy Falls - This one is fairly self-explanatory right?  The Wolves of Mercy Falls are all about people dealing with being or becoming Werewolves.  I think a teenaged Lupin would have really appreciated reading about other people with his furry problem.

The Raven Cycle - Apparently, Lupin and Maggie Stiefvater go together!  The Raven Boys are almost like another version of The Marauders. I picture Lupin taking a trip down memory lane with the Raven Boys and I think he'd enjoy them a great deal.

Lord of the Rings - And an epic, life or death questing adventure would be something Lupin could relate to.  I think he'd like Aragorn, Legolas, Faramir and Boromir...as well as Gandalf :) And who doesn't enjoy some Hobbits?!

Dead Poet's Society Movie - Ok I know that this is a movie but John Keating and Remus Lupin are both inspiration, life changing teachers.  And I don't think Lupin ever fully appreciated how significant he was at Hogwarts so I hope that this movie helps him see.

What books would you recommend to Lupin?
