Fandom Mashup #114

Fandom Mashups
Fandom Mashups is an original feature here at Lunar Rainbows Reviews.  Every week, I propose a unique fictional scenario and then we build our own personal dream team of five fictional characters from five different fandoms to complete the task!  Anyone is welcome to join up - all I ask is that you link back to me somewhere in your post :)

Happy Sunday all!  I hope you're enjoying the weekend thus far? It's nice and sunny in these parts but we've been so busy packing for the big move (10 days!!!) that I haven't been able to go out and enjoy Summer much.  It'll be worth it though ♥ and they're will be plenty of Summer left once we're moved :)

"Wit beyond measure is man's greatest treasure" Pick 5 characters from other fandoms who you know would be a perfect fit in Ravenclaw

Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock instantly comes to mind when I think of Ravenclaws from other fandoms.  He's the quintessential Ravenclaw, being as intelligent as can be and seeing patterns and clues others would miss.

The 10th Doctor

Out of all the Doctor's regenerations, the 10th is the most Ravenclaw in my opinion.  He's brilliant, he has a clever sense of humor, he loves reading (and Harry Potter) plus he's got the brainy specks ♥

Gandalf

Gandalf could be a Gryffindor yes, but I think he'd fit in nicely with the Ravenclaw bunch.  He saw the signs of Sauron returning before anyone else and he isn't scared of doing a little research

Sailor Mercury

I always had a soft spot for Sailor Mercury growing up and not just because she likes short hair like me XD Sailor Mercury is the smartest girl in her school and she isn't afraid to show it!

Lisa Simpson

And finally, there couldn't be a character better suited for Ravenclaw than Lisa Simpson.  I think she'd get sorted there before the Sorting Hat even touched her head. Like. A. Boss.

Which characters would YOU sort into Ravenclaw?

Harry Potter Moment #197

Harry Potter Moment of the Week
Harry Potter Moment of the Week was created by Leah @ Uncorked Thoughts  and is hosted here @ Lunar Rainbows Reviews. The idea is to share a favorite moment, magical item, character, spell, quote or memory  from the books, films or J.K.Rowling herself!  How to join up &  upcoming topics here.

Hi everyone!  I hope you're all having a great week so far? At least it's Friday tomorrow ;)  But before we get to the weekend, let's talk quotes from the 5th book in the series :

Favorite Quote from Order of the Phoenix?

^^ This scene perfectly showcases how sassy Harry had gotten but it also is a surprising side to McGonagall and her true inner self. I loved getting to know her better in OotP and watch her go head to head with Umbridge.

And I've always had a soft spot for:

We've all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That's who we really are.” ♥

What is your favorite quote from Order of the Phoenix?

Happy Sunday Wednesday ! Wait...what?  Sorry guys, in the midst of packing, cleaning, running around for our new house this past weekend, I totally flaked on my Fandom Mashup post. I was going to skip this week altogether but then I saw some of your posts and I just had to put mine up...even though  I'm super late!

The Moon is full, bright and it's making you feel dreamy so you've decided to stay up all night and gaze at it.  Which characters do you think would want to enjoy this evening with you?

Serena/Sailor Moon

Sailor Moon literally comes FROM the Moon and I remember scenes of her gazing up at it longingly. I'd love to stare up at the Moon with her and here all about her life there.

Luna Lovegood

It's right there in her name: Luna. I know it's because she's a bit Moon-y but I can't think of anyone better suited to spend a night with gazing up at the sky ♥

Rhysand

Rhys is the High Lord of the Night Court so he seems ideally suited to admire the Moon with - plus he's pretty dreamy too so there's that XD

Bruce Wayne/Batman

Batman IS the night. He said so himself.  I think the guy spends too much time kicking butt at night and he could do with a relaxing one spent dreaming about the moon and stars.

Katara/Sokka

Katara is a Water Bender and is thus ruled by the Moon. She probably admires the Moon plenty but I don't think she'd mind doing it a little more :) And well...Sokka's girlfriend turned into the Moon so i doubt he'd mind spending more time gazing up at it.

Which fictional characters would you enjoy a Moonlit night with?

Harry Potter Moment #196

Harry Potter Moment of the Week
Harry Potter Moment of the Week was created by Leah @ Uncorked Thoughts  and is hosted here @ Lunar Rainbows Reviews. The idea is to share a favorite moment, magical item, character, spell, quote or memory  from the books, films or J.K.Rowling herself!  How to join up &  upcoming topics here.

Hello Potterheads and happy Wizard Thursday!  I hope everyone's week is going brilliantly and that a little magic today is just what the Doctor ordered:

You can have lunch with 3 people involved with the movies, Who are they and why?

Dude...only 3?! This is going to be a tough one but I'm going to try to make it work without cheating - like always - let's see...

Emma Watson - Bringing Hermione Granger to life was quite the feat but Miss Watson came through with flying colours! I'm not going to pretend that I wasn't a little annoyed when movie-Hermione got some of Harry or Ron's lines/moments instead but that doesn't take anything away from Emma Watson and the amazing woman that she is. I have so much respect and admiration for her as a person it would be a dream come true to meet her!

Richard Harris - MY Dumbledore, through and through.  I adore Richard Harris' take on Albus Dumbledore more than anything, but I've loved that man in every movie I've seen him in from Gladiator to The Count of Monte Cristo and everything in between. R.I.P. Richard Harris.

Gary Oldman - Sirius Black AND Commissioner Gordon? That's 2 of my top 3 fandoms of life so there is no list without this man.  I mean, sure he's been in a million amazing movies besides that but....SIRIUS BLACK AND COMMISSIONER GORDON. That is all ♥

Bonus:

Daniel Radcliffe

Of course I *had* to cheat because I had to include the boy who brought ''The Boy Who Lived'' to life.  He wasn't the Harry Potter I imagined in my head when reading the books but that person doesn't exist irl. Daniel Radcliffe did a phenomenal job bringing Harry Potter from page to film and I have tons of respect for him as an actor and a human being.

Those are my top picks but that list could also include Dame Maggie Smith, Tom Felton, Evanna Lynch, Alan Rickman, David Thewlis and James + Oliver Phelps. See I knew I was going to have to cheat. As usual.

Which people involved in the films would you like to have lunch with?

Fandom Mashup #112

Fandom Mashups
Fandom Mashups is an original feature here at Lunar Rainbows Reviews.  Every week, I propose a unique fictional scenario and then we build our own personal dream team of five fictional characters from five different fandoms to complete the task!  Anyone is welcome to join up - all I ask is that you link back to me somewhere in your post :)

Happy Sunday! It's nice and sunny here today (finally) but also.ridiculously hot and humid so I've been trying to stay cool all day - and failing miserably.  I hope you've all enjoyed your day thus far and if not well let's have some fun:

Unlikely duos: Pair up 2 characters from different fandoms that you think would would NOT go well together (this can be romantic or otherwise - think along the lines of The Hulk and Severus Snape LOL)

Harry Potter/Harley Quinn

Harley Quinn would be way to crazy for Harry in the way that Bellatrix Lestrange is crazy.  Harry would want to get rid of her as soon as possible.Likewise, Harley would probably think Harry is too goody goody and I can see her trying her best to drive him to distraction.

The Doctor/Severus Snape

While both of these men are tortured souls, I think that The Doctor would have no time for Snape's sullen and abusive ways. Snape would probably want to snark The Doctor to death for ''trying to be a hero too and snark the hell out of him - luckily The Doctor is well equipped to deal with snack!

Sherlock Holmes/Castiel

As much as I would love to witness these two meet up (#SuperWhoLock ftw!) I think Castiel's mere existence would be an affront to Sherlock's intelligence. He simply could not accept Cas. Castiel would have no time to waste trying to convince Sherlock of what he is so he might just angel zap him

Batman/Bellatrix Lestrange

Speaking of Bellatrix...her madwoman antics would be an automatic take-down notice for Batman. He'd want to take her out of commision a.s.a.p. Bellatrix would do her best to torment Batman since he's so incorruptible and his inflexibility would me her crazy(-er)

The Winchesters/The GAang

These two fight for the same side but The Winchesters bend the rules on a regular basis and they don't shy away from killing and torture when they need to. That sort of stuff would not fly with Avatar Aang who lives by tolerance and mercy. Sparks would fly for sure!

What are your ideas for unlikely fictional duos?

Review: A Court of Wings & Ruin

A Court of Wings and Ruin
by Sarah J. Maas
A Court of Thorns and Roses #3
Published May 2nd 2017 by Bloomsbury

Feyre has returned to the Spring Court, determined to gather information on Tamlin's maneuverings and the invading king threatening to bring Prythian to its knees. But to do so she must play a deadly game of deceit-and one slip may spell doom not only for Feyre, but for her world as well.

As war bears down upon them all, Feyre must decide who to trust amongst the dazzling and lethal High Lords-and hunt for allies in unexpected places.

In this thrilling third book in the #1 New York Times and USA Today bestselling series from Sarah J. Maas, the earth will be painted red as mighty armies grapple for power over the one thing that could destroy them all.
A Court of Wings and Ruin was obviously going to RUIN me...I mean, it's right there in the title. Despite the fact that I have now read 9 books by Sarah J. Maas, this was the first series conclusion from her so honestly, I was a little worried because I didn't know what to expect. Would Maas destroy us? Clearly. Could she close off such a powerful series in a satisfying way? Likely. Was everyone going to die?  Likely.  Would I be rolled up in a ball at the end crying and screaming? Probably. So with all of those things in mind, I started ACoWaR with a mix of excitement/anticipation/anxiety that is now the norm when reading a Maas book and I hoped I'd survive to share my thoughts by the end.  And I did!

So, if I could describe A Court of Wings and Ruin in one word, it would be INTENSE. The stakes were already killer by the end of A Court of Mist and Fury. We knew what Feyre was walking into. We knew that there was a deadly war looming ever closer. We knew that some of our favorite characters had suffered horribly, and were likely to suffer much more by the end. You wouldn't think that things could get any more unbearable but Miss Sarah J. Maas was like: Oh yeah?!  Watch this! And then she proceeds to take things up a notch. And then another. Aaaand then another. Multiplied by a million. I didn't think I'd ever say that a book might be too intense but honestly, there were parts in ACoWaR where I just couldn't deal. It was all too much to bear.  The suspense truly felt like it was killing me.

As usual, beyond the crazy intensity of the plot, characters are where Maas shines, as well as the relationships that these characters build with one another. You end up loving EVERYONE in the heroes corner. You ship EVERYONE with EVERYONE and you WILL go down with ALL of the ships!  I actually ship some of these characters with more than one other character. Yup, I'm that messed up about these ships and I don't even care! #Iregretnothing

Plot-wise, there were plenty of surprises to be had in A Court of Wings and Ruin, plenty of twists that I didn't see coming...and a few that I did see coming but it didn't make them any less satisfying when they went down.  As far as the ending goes well, it was indeed explosive and harrowing but parts of it also fell flatter than I was expecting. I wasn't really underwhelmed but I feel like there was more potential here that ended up being wasted. I also could have done with a few extra chapters at the end - I didn't quite get enough closure for my liking.  I know that Maas is planning more books for the series but that doesn't mean I didn't want the events of this trilogy to have a more concrete conclusion.

The bottom line is that A Court of Wings and Ruin was a solid, explosive, thrilling and satisfying end to the trilogy, but it didn't quite live up to A Court of Mist and Fury for me, which remains my favorite out of the three books in the series. I'm ok with that though because I know we have more books to look forward to and hopefully at that point, the series will culminate into an ending worthier of these characters and their world.

Previously:

A Court of Thorns and Roses
A Court of Mist and Fury

My Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Stars

Harry Potter Moment #195

Harry Potter Moment of the Week
Harry Potter Moment of the Week was created by Leah @ Uncorked Thoughts  and is hosted here @ Lunar Rainbows Reviews. The idea is to share a favorite moment, magical item, character, spell, quote or memory  from the books, films or J.K.Rowling herself!  How to join up &  upcoming topics here.

Hi everyone! Well it looks like I got the topics mixed up last week and did this week's topic instead...oops!  To see the post that should have been this week's post click here. Which means that today, I'll be doing what should have been last week's topic...le sigh. Confused? I sure am LOL!

What is your favorite Harry Potter book cover? -Pick one cover from ANY edition.

I shared this with Lee of Rally the Readers last week (you know, when she posted the right topic and I didn't hahaha) but I thought I'd reshare in my own post as well. So, I was actually gifted the first 5 Harry Potter books by a friend as a ''read these or else'' type scenario over ten years ago and she'd bought the paperback editions with the adult UK covers seen here:

I then proceeded to purchase HBP and finally DH as the same hardcover versions because I fancied myself too 'grown up' for the more popular children's covers, be it the U.K. ones or the U.S. ones that were more popular at the time. The thing is, as the years have passed and my love for the series has kept on growing, I find myself more drawn to the U.S. Children's Editions that any other. I need them like air.  I simply can't justify buying a second edition of books I already own and have made memories with.  I guess I'll just keep hoping a rich benefactor will gift them to me someday soon...or start buying the set one book at a time...

So, out of the U.S. Children's Editions, I kind of have two favorites (shocking right?) which are:

Half Blood Prince is my favorite cover for aesthetic reasons and emotional ones. Firstly, I love the green cover with the purple accents. I love how eerie and ominous it all looks with the glowing lights. I think Dumbledore looks brilliant and powerful just like he should do. Harry looks like a young adult here instead of the kid he started out being which is great too!  Emotionally though, I'd been waiting for Dumbledore to take up a larger role in Harry's magical education since the first book so seeing them together here thrilled me the first time I laid eyes on this cover so that was a big deal to me...and it still is. I'll never get tired of seeing those two together.

Deathly Hallows on the other hand doesn't have colours I'm drawn to as much as HBP does but I think that Harry looks so badass and powerful here, alone, fierce, determined and ready to meet his destiny. When you open it up to see the back cover, seeing creepy book Voldemort is something else too (see below) but honestly, DH is my favorite book of the series, so when I see the cover, I always get an urge to hug the book, so I couldn't leave it out if only for those reasons ♥

Here are these gorgeous covers with the front and back cover art:

What's your favorite cover(s) out of all the HP editions?

Hello all and happy Sunday :)  With the unseasonably cold June we've been having so far, I find myself longing for a nice warm day at the beach!  So with that in mind...

With Summer drawing ever nearer, you fancy a trip at the beach.  Which fictional characters do you think would want to tag along with you?

Aelin

Whenever I think about relaxing of having fun with girls, I think of Aelin. I mean, clearly girlfriend needs to let her hair down...and she deserves to more than anyone. More than that though she seems like a lot of fun!

Avatar Aang

Aang seems like just about the most fun dude to be around, am I right?  He's goofy and sweet and he's got those mad bending skills^^ Imagine the giggles to be had with a day at the beach with an Avatar!

Blue Sargent
*Source

Blue is another girl I instantly think of when I think of characters I'd like to hang out with irl. She's down to earth and very real. I love that in a girlfriend.  Oh and naturally she can bring those Raven Boys around...you know...if she has to ;)

Feyre

Obviously I'd love to see what happens when Aelin and Feyre meet but I also think that those two plus Blue would be the ultimate girlfriend bundle LOL! And between Feyre and Aelin if ever we run into ANY kind of trouble, we'd be safe. (Not that we're expecting trouble on the beach)

The Weasley Twins

If I'm going to cut loose and have a good time, I want Fred AND George there.  I can see them getting a total kick out of Aang and vice versa. Between the three of them, there should be laughs and craziness for days!

Who would you want to spend a day in sun with?

Harry Potter Moment #194

Harry Potter Moment of the Week
Harry Potter Moment of the Week was created by Leah @ Uncorked Thoughts  and is hosted here @ Lunar Rainbows Reviews. The idea is to share a favorite moment, magical item, character, spell, quote or memory  from the books, films or J.K.Rowling herself!  How to join up &  upcoming topics here.

Hello Potterheads! Happy Thursday :) I hope you're all in good form today because we're going to talk about a very important topic: sass.  Case in point:

Best moment of pure SASS?

People often underestimate this series as being childish, or they get caught up in DYING OF FEELS and forget our the Harry Potter Series is also full of humor and, especially sass.  There are lots of moments to chose from, especially in the books and especially from book Harry.  Here are a few choice classics:

The ONE time he actually did what he was told^^

When he sassily pointed out the obvious^^

But this next one is the clear winner for me and the sassiest bit of sass to ever sass.  Truly, this will go down in history:

Book Harry is the KING of Sass!

What's your favorite sassy moment in the series?

Happy Sunday all!  I'm sorry I'm a bit late, I just got back from a wonderful albeit exhausting hike in a local national park! We left super early so I didn't get to post before I left. Better late than never right?

"Those patient Hufflepuffs are true and unafraid of toil" - Pick 5 characters from other fandoms that you think would fit in well in Hufflepuff House!

The 11th Doctor

The 11th has been fancast as a Hufflepuff time and time again and I tend to agree!  He's friendlier and kinder than his other incarnations and that gentle soul just speaks to the Puff in me :)  #GryffinPuffPride

Lirael

I debated putting saving Lirael for Ravenclaw - since she works in a library - but she mainly takes the job to be alone. From there, she dedicates herself to learning magic until she finds 'Lirael's Path' and sets off on her quest. She's determined and loyal just like her companion The Disreputable Dog ♥

Pavel Chekov

Chekov is brave like a Gryffindor and brilliant like a Ravenclaw but something about his gentle spirit and innocence makes him seem like he'd fit in perfectly in Hufflepuff - plus he's already wearing yellow LOL!

Molly Hooper

Molly seems like another natural 'Puff to me with her unassuming nature and her dedication to her friends. We all know she works damn hard 100% of the time so she'd surely make her fellow Hufflepuffs proud!

 Noah Czerny

This last one is cheating since author Maggie Stiefvater herself sorted Noah into Hufflepuff but I couldn't resist - you know I love my Raven Boys!  Noah is so sweet and fans of the series know he busted his ass to help his friends when the needed him.

Thoughts?
Which fictional characters would you sort into Hufflepuff?

Harry Potter Moment #193

Harry Potter Moment of the Week
Harry Potter Moment of the Week was created by Leah @ Uncorked Thoughts  and is hosted here @ Lunar Rainbows Reviews. The idea is to share a favorite moment, magical item, character, spell, quote or memory  from the books, films or J.K.Rowling herself!  How to join up &  upcoming topics here.

Hi! Hi!  I hope everyone's week is going ok? We're doing one of my favorite topics today, recommending books to our favorite Harry Potter characters.  Though this week's picks might not seem like avid readers, I'm willing to be we can find books to pique their interest:

Which books would you recommend to Fred and George?

Percy Jackson/ Heroes of Olympus - Something about the humor in Riordan's books just screams 'Weasley twins' to me - I think they'd both enjoy the mythological aspects too.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Granted, this is more sci-fi than Fred and George might be used to but again, the laugh out loud moments seem right up their alley.

The Bartimaeus Sequence - Bartimaeus' sass would make the twins howl with mirth but the complex magical system and politics here would surely speak to them as well.

Artemis Fowl - The specific type of humor in the Artemis Fowl books reminds me of the Weasley twins a lot. There's sass but then there's crude humor too plus some serious action. This could very well be a favorite for them!

Avatar: The Last Airbender - Finally, if anyone would get Sokka's humor more than Fred and George, I haven't come across them yet.  And a young, innocent boy setting out to save the world (friends included!) should feel familiar enough don't you think?

What books would you recommend to the Weasley twins?

Fandom Mashup #109

Fandom Mashups
Fandom Mashups is an original feature here at Lunar Rainbows Reviews.  Every week, I propose a unique fictional scenario and then we build our own personal dream team of five fictional characters from five different fandoms to complete the task!  Anyone is welcome to join up - all I ask is that you link back to me somewhere in your post :)

Happy Sun-day everyone!  I hope you're enjoying the weekend, or long weekend for my fellow Canadians :)  I'm always off Mondays though so it doesn't change much for me LOL!  I'm still going to make the most of the sunshine though!  But before I do, we're talking introverts today:

Introvert Pride!  Who are your 5 favorite fictional introverts?

Harry Potter

I think Harry is a classic introvert.  He could have had an entourage at Hogwarts but instead he selected a few select people to hang out with.  He always tries to do things alone, though that may be because solitude was thrust upon him at an early age...

Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock said so himself: he doesn't have any friends. Just one. He prefers to be (mostly) alone because he thinks everyone else is stupid.  Personally it seems like a lot of introverts can relate to that - and why Sherlock is such a lasting literary figure.

Castiel

My precious Castiel. He's so awkward, I just love him to bits!  Castiel's people skills have never been anything but rusty. And I hope he never changes because seeing him struggle through it makes me seem like an extrovert LOL!

Batman

Batman chose to be mostly friendless to protect the people he cares about...but I suppose being a billionaire orphan didn't make things easy for him. Nevertheless his 'lone wolf' persona is what drew me to him in my youth and through adulthood.

Feyre Archeron

Feyre lived a life of solitude before ACOTAR kicked off and even once things kicked off for her, she's kept her circle relatively small. Something that has persisted throughout the series thus far. It's one of the many reasons I like her. Well, that and Rhys.

Bonus:

Lisa Simpson

The most classic introvert I could think of - when it comes to my life anyway. Lisa might sometimes long for friends but more often than not, she's comfortable in her solitude and among her books. A girl after my own heart!

Squidward Tentacles

Squidward is my spirit animal when I'm feeling my most anti-social.  He just cracks me up because he says what most introverts are feeling. And the poor guy has to live next to and work with THE most extroverted sponge of all time XD

The Raven Boys + Blue

I know the Raven Crew has five members, but with the exception of Gansey maybe, none of them are particularly welcoming of other people. That's why it's so precious how Blue fits in with the boys so seamlessly. And why most of us wish we could be welcomed into the group too!

Sabriel and Lirael

Lirael might be the most classic introvert of the two leading ladies but Sabriel sets off on her journey totally alone so I think they both fit the bill. They're both fiercely independent and their circles are limited to a select few - with animals taking up nearly half the group LOL!

Thoughts? Who are your favorite fictional introverts?
