Top Ten Tuesday #55

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish which features a variety of bookish top ten lists!

Ten Books I Read Purely Based on a Recommendation

Twilight - I was deep (DEEP) in a HP withdrawal when my cousin Giselle said I needed to check out Twilight. Despite the film series and changing tastes, this series helped me get into the paranormal genre, as well as YA romances.

The Hunger Games - The very same cousin got my out of my Twilight withdrawal by turning me onto my very first dystopian read. THG remains one of my all-time favorite series to this day and my love for the series has only grown with time!

Divergent - After THG, I needed more dystopians in my life. Luckily there was Divergent. I enjoyed the first book back when I read it but have since fallen out of love with this series *cough* thanks to Allegiant *cough* but I'm still glad I familiarized myself with more dystopian fiction.

The Fever Series - This was my first adult UF series so I wasn't sure I'd get into it but friends told me to give it a try and to be patient with the MC for the first two books. I listened and it paid off big time. I have nothing but love for this series.

Darkest Powers Trilogy - Miss Armstrong came highly recommended by the few bookish family members I have so I gave her a try with The Darkest Powers trilogy and I am so happy I did! I loved these characters and their world.

Mistborn - Another cousin told me that if I liked fantasy I needed to read Mistborn. And Sanderson for that matter. She'd discovered the books by sheer coincidence and they ended up becoming of favorite of hers...as they did for me! #SandersonArmy

Charley Davidson - After loving Adult UF, I needed MORE. Luckily, a few friends had really enjoyed Charley Davidson so I took a chance and I'm happy to say I felt the same way :D Charley is the best thing.

The Lunar Chronicles - Despite my love of sci-fi and fairytales, I just wasn't sure if I'd love Cinder. It wasn't until every.single.one. of my blogger friends told me to quit stalling and READ IT that I found out how wrong I was...

The Raven Cycle - One of my best blogger friends Lee was blown away by The Raven Boys and her review and gushing made me add it to my wishlist. I'm forever grateful to her for pushing one of my now all-time favorite series on me ♥

A Monster Calls - Another blogging bestie Aylee gifted me A Monster Calls. Neither of us are big contemporary readers but she'd adored this and felt I would too. She was right. Lots of feels and a truly memorable story made this one a winner.

What books have you read purely based on a recommendation?

  1. I love dystopians! I'm not tired of them yet even though I know they're sort of out of vogue at the moment, or maybe there's just dystopia fatigue. :) But a good one still rocks lol. The Fever books I don't know much about but I have noticed them mainly because they always seem to have nice covers!

  2. The Book Thief I would not have picked up otherwise. I really still have to continue the Fever series beyond the first book. The first book was interesting. Great list.

  3. I always feel some amount of trepidation when I recommend a book to a friend in case it ends up not being a good fit. So I am def so pleased that you loved A Monster Calls as much as I did! And I am both excited and anxious for the movie adaptation!

  4. I'm having the exact same experience with The Lunar Chronicles, so I guess it's about time I give in and try it out. Same goes for The Raven Cycle - though I've tried it a few times and haven't finished. Great post!

  5. I've read a few of these! I'm glad you read them, especially the mainstream ones (books > movies!). I need to take everyone's recommendation (literally everyone's) and read Stiefvater's Raven Cycle series. It seems great and now all of the books are published, woohoo!

    Wonderful post, Micheline. =)

  6. MISTBORN AND THE RAVEN BOYS ARE PERFECTION ON EARTH!!! THEY ARE THE BE-ALL, END-ALL OF SPECULATIVE FICTION AND THE WORLD WILL NEVER...*deep breath* Excellent choice. I also really liked Patrick Ness' other series, Chaos Walking, and I mean to pick that one up, too. It's always great to have bookish folk to throw good reads in your path! Glad you've got those. =)

  7. Oh gosh, the blogging world definitely got me interested in The Lunar Chronicles and the Raven Boys. I'm so glad to have read them - though I still have the final books in EACH series to read. haha

  10. A lot of these books I had on my tbr but probably wouldn't have actually picked them up and read them had not for the overwhelmingly positive reviews from fellow reviewers. I'm so grateful for blogging community! :)

  11. Hehe. I hear you with those coughs about Allegiant Micheline! I absolutely adored Divergent, but couldn't bring myself to read the rest of the series knowing what happened in the third book:( Still glad I found the first book thanks to all the blogger love though!

  12. This is a great list! I remember picking up THG because Stephenie Meyer recommended it and gah I fell in love. Love Divergent too, even Allegiant even though I know it let so many down.

  14. I don't think I ever really came out of HP withdrawal, but The Hunger Games definitely helped. I also read The Raven Cycle on recommendation, and fell deeply and utterly in love. I need to get to Brandon Sanderson asap...

  15. ohh this is SUCH An amazing list! *flails* I'm so glad you gave The Raven Cycle a chance BECAUSE HELLO YESSS THE BEAUTIFUL RAVEN BOYS AND BLUE AND THEIR CREEPTASTIC LOVELY LITTLE TOWN. <3 (Sorry.😂 I'm a bit obsessed. Ahem.)
And I loved A Monster Calls too! I'm so glad I gave that a chance and I'm 99% sure I read it due to blogging recommendations. It's a marvellous thing when we listen to recs and get the BEST books from them, right?! (Also so cool that your cousin is a bookworm too!)

  16. I know I read The Raven Boys finally because I kept seeing it on Lee's and your blogs especially in the Fandom Mashups. I'm pretty sure y'all are why I read Throne of Glass too so thank you for that! I also read The Kate Daniels Series and Shatter Me based on Jennifer's recommendation from Bad Bird Reads and Jessica from a GREAT read has recommended quite a few as well like The Lunar Chronicles and The Lux Series. I have found a lot of my favorite series based on reviews from blogger friends and the Top Tuesday lists.
