Waiting on Wednesday *138*

Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine in which we spotlight an upcoming book release we're especially looking forward to!

Here's my pick this week:

Rebel Genius by Michael Dante DiMartino
Expected Publication: October 4th 2016 by Roaring Book Press

In twelve-year-old Giacomo's Renaissance-inspired world, art is powerful, dangerous, and outlawed. Every artist possesses a Genius, a birdlike creature that is the living embodiment of an artist's creative spirit. Those caught with one face a punished akin to death, so when Giacomo discovers he has a Genius, he knows he's in serious trouble.

Luckily, he finds safety in a secret studio where young artists and their Geniuses train in sacred geometry to channel their creative energies as weapons. But when a murderous artist goes after the three Sacred Tools--objects that would allow him to destroy the world and everyone in his path--Giacomo and his friends must risk their lives to stop him.
Co-creator of Avatar: The Last Airbender is all I needed to read when the Canadian Publishers, Raincoast Books asked me if there was any upcoming MG titles I was interested in. I enjoy a quality MG read from time to time but I certainly don't read them all. However, a MG coming from half of the genius that thought up Avatar? Must. Read.

Beyond the obvious, Rebel Genius sounds wickedly innovative: A renaissance-inspired world, with art seemingly outlawed and where artists have animal companions of sorts that are direct embodiments of their artistic spirit. Then there's a secret 'studio' a.k.a. Magical School, where Artists learn to hone their skills into weapons.  Eeeep!  My vow to wait to read this one until the release date is closer at hand may very well be broken soon...

What are you waiting on this week?

  8. I've been hearing a lot about this one! I actually haven't paid much attention to the description though, because I didn't know it was MG. For the longest time I thought it was YA, but I'm still very curious.
