Book Recs for Potterheads

I did one of these posts during the first year of Harry Potter Month, but as I was looking over my old post, I realized that since then, I've read quite a bit more fantasy that have the same vibe as the Harry Potter Series.  Some of these will be repeats from my previous post because I still feel the same way about them, but there are a lot of new additions ~

If you love Harry Potter you might like:

The Old Kingdom  - My main inspiration for doing this kind of post again this year.  In my review for the final installment, I mentioned that this series brought on the same kinds of feelings that the Harry Potter had done...maybe not to quite the same degree, but close.  What's more: while I was listening to Sabriel on audio, the boyfriend goes: wow, this kind of reminds me of a Harry Potter-type story!

Alcatraz VS The Evil Librarians - The newest addition to this list. Alcatraz is one of a kind, while simultaneously reminding me of HP and poking gentle fun at the series and others like it.  The magic, characters and plot are wholly unique but the tropes and setup are so reminiscent of classic fantasy adventures.

Throne of Glass - This series doesn't remind me of Harry Potter all that much...other than the soul-crushing feels, the increasing presence of magic as the series progresses and the ever-climbing stakes. As two of my all-time favorite series, I think they go together nicely.

Mistborn - Here we see two villains grasping at immortality and becoming more wretched the longer they stay alive.  There's also a chosen one that rises from nothing to become a force to be reckoned with. YES.

The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings - A repeat from two years ago...if only because so many people have yet to read these classics. Admittedly, it can take a while to get used to the tone, but once you get into the groove, these are well worth it!

The Raven Cycle - Boarding school, magic, prophetic dreams and friendships to consume your very soul. It might not be the same style of book but the important themes remain. I won't say more because I might just start gushing and never stop.

The School for Good & Evil - Magical boarding school in this instance, where young teens learn magic. The story definitely doesn't have the same depth, and nor do the characters but there are some important themes explored here. Plus the stories are good fun.

His Dark Materials - Hello modern classic fantasy for younger readers and adults alike...just like with Potter.  This trilogy has magic, magical animals, magical items and magical friendships. Hmmm, I might be due for a reread here.

Heroes of Olympus - For my first Potterhead book rec post, I went with the Percy Jackson Series but this time I wanted to feature the HoO books because the characters mature and behave more like Harry and Co. do in the later books.  The story and characters lack in complexity but they make up for it in humor.

Shades of MagicMagical Londons, dark and light magic and a coat that is basically a Room of Requirement.  How could this series NOT make this list?!  Oh and there's also intense feels, so Potter fans should feel right at home.

What books would you recommend to Potterheads?

  3. I loved the Heroes of Olympus, those character kept me laughing all the time. And The Hobbit is one of my favorite books. These all sound like great books to read if you want some Harry Potter vibes. I've read the first Raven Cycle book, Shades of Magic is on my radar, and I haven't yet gotten to Throne of Glass (I know, I know) but it's coming soon!
I'd recommend the Gotham Academy comic series. It's a boarding school with lots of mysteries and a main character that has a whole set of secrets and oddities to call her own. It has a darker tone than the beginning of the Harry Potter series but it's still very good.

  6. I was wondering where Percy Jackson was! LOL I definitely enjoyed that one a lot after Harry. I am not a Golden Compass fan though. I saw the movie, then bought the books and only made it to chapter 3 before stopping. Zane just read the first one though when he needed something to read after a test at school. He said it was 'alright' so I don't think he's going to continue reading it. I know, I know. I'm crazy. There are a ton of people who love that series. I adore Throne of Glass obviously :D And Raven Cycle. I haven't made it to Shades of Magic, but it's on the list. I might would add Lunar Chronicles to the list.

    1. LOL! HoO almost didn't make the cut, since the PJ series had been on my first post like this but then I decided to add it in anyway, since the characters are older in HoO kind of like at the end of HP. That's ok! We can't all love the same books! I didn't care for the film of The Golden Compass though but the books were quite enjoyable! At least we share ToG, Raven Cycle and Lunar Chronicles! And hopefully Shades of Magic too :D

  7. I just finished A Darker Shade of Magic and I really liked it even though it took me FOREVER to get into it. I really need to read Throne of Glass this summer and Mistborn is definitely on my list even though I don't think I've ever read the summary for it. Thanks for the book recs!

  8. Shades of Magic is definitely a must-read for Potterheads! You're so right about Kell's coat being a wearable Room of Requirement, LOL! Obviously, I recommend The Raven Cycle to everyone breathing. XD I am inching ever closer to starting The Old Kingdom and can't wait to chat about it with you!
