Harry Potter Moment #149

Harry Potter Moment of the Week

Harry Potter Moment of the Week is a  meme created by Leah @ Uncorked Thoughts  and hosted here @ Lunar Rainbows Reviews. The idea is to share a favorite moment, magical item, character, spell, quote, object from the books, films or J.K.Rowling herself!  How to join up &  upcoming topics here.

Hihi! How is everyone doing today?  I've been very busy this week and will be next week because I'm replacing my boss at work. At least tomorrow is a Holiday over here and the boyfriend, the best friend and I are going river tubing and capping the day off with a concert and fireworks (It'll be Canada Day!) Regardless, I'm feeling especially Potter-ish...and you'll find out why after this:

If you could change one thing from the third film, what would it be?

PoA is my favorite film of the bunch! I adore the tone, the visuals, and the characters are appropriately aged up and a little more moody which works perfectly. Oh and Harry's hair is EXACTLY how it is in the books and how it always should have been in the films (but no big deal) I literally have no complaints about that film. Except one:

I wish Richard Harris could have still been Dumbledore.

I mean naturally I wish the man was still alive regardless. He was a truly gifted actor and I've loved him in every film I've seen him in. The thing is though: He was an absolutely perfect Dumbledore. My fondest wish would have been if he could have played Dumbledore for the duration of the series but barring that, I wish he could have at least been in Prisoner of Azkaban. My favorite film with the proper Dumbledore would have been truly flawless.

*In case you missed it, we announced the return of Harry Potter Month for July! It'll be our 3rd year so we hope to see you all there. For the announcement post, click here and stay tuned for the kick-off post tomorrow!*

  1. I LOVE how we both mentioned hair in our posts this week, LOL! Harry's looked the best in this film, for sure.

Richard Harris was and always will be Dumbledore for me. I adore the PoA movie with all my heart, but I'll always wonder what it would've been like with his Dumbledore in it.

    1. OMG WE TOTALLY DID!! Harry's hair was THE REAL DEAL in this one - exactly how I imagined it in the books.

Same here Lee, he IS Dumbledore. PoA is my favorite too but it'd be a million times better with Richard Harris. That bit with the time-turner and his speech at the start would have been truly EPIC!

  2. So sad to lose such an iconic actor in the middle of the series. I have a feeling many people share your opinion on this one.

    1. I agree Nicole! I loved him in every single film I saw him in but he IS Dumbledore. A tragic loss indeed...

  3. Though I would prefer Richard Harris to play Dumbledore till the end, because he was just perfect with this old and wise wizard vibe going for him, not to mention resplendent robes and a twinkling eye, I actually enjoyed Michael Gambon's take on Dumbledore in the third film. He was less impressive and his robes were too simple and sort of limp and his beard not as long and white, but he was fun and he had a certain Dumbledore-ishness about him. But that's where my enjoyment ended. In all the future films he was nothing like Dumbledore was supposed to be and sometimes his portrayal was almost like an insult to a faithful fan like myself.

    1. I agree that PoA featured Gambon pretty much at his best. I couldn't stand him in GoF, OotP but he was better in HBP and DH. I just think there were so many other quality actors that would have better done Harris justice (like Peter O'Toole)and it upsets me that Gambon never bothered to read the books or get to know 'his' characters.

  4. This is the perfect answer to me. I had no problems with the 3rd film. I felt like it stuck very well to the book, but I agree on this part. It's not felt until the 4th one for me though, the big difference he has acting the character of Dumbledore.

    1. I agree, Gambon was more subdued in PoA but he still didn't seem properly Dumbledore-ish. And with the massive love I have for PoA, Harris' absence is felt all the more because of it...

  5. So my Harry Potter newb is showing here because I didn't realize the actor changed. *facepalm* I usually always notice switches like that, but I guess I had such a gap between CoS and PoA that I didn't recognize it. It will be interesting to see the change in Dumbledore from here on out.

    1. Don't feel too bad - I actually saw the first 3 movies before reading the books so that time I didn't notice. After I read the books, I rewatched what movies were out and OMG it was painful o.O
