Waiting on Wednesday *130*

Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine in which we spotlight an upcoming book release we're especially looking forward to!

Here's my pick this week:

The Girl Who Drank the Moon
by Kelly Barnhill
Expected Publication: August 9th 2016 by Algonquin

Every year, the people of the Protectorate leave a baby as an offering to the witch who lives in the forest. They hope this sacrifice will keep her from terrorizing their town. But the witch in the forest, Xan, is kind and gentle. She shares her home with a wise Swamp Monster named Glerk and a Perfectly Tiny Dragon, Fyrian. Xan rescues the abandoned children and deliver them to welcoming families on the other side of the forest, nourishing the babies with starlight on the journey.

One year, Xan accidentally feeds a baby moonlight instead of starlight, filling the ordinary child with extraordinary magic. Xan decides she must raise this enmagicked girl, whom she calls Luna, as her own. To keep young Luna safe from her own unwieldy power, Xan locks her magic deep inside her. When Luna approaches her thirteenth birthday, her magic begins to emerge on schedule--but Xan is far away. Meanwhile, a young man from the Protectorate is determined to free his people by killing the witch. Soon, it is up to Luna to protect those who have protected her--even if it means the end of the loving, safe world she’s always known.
That cover is too stunning for words. Honestly, look at it^^ The main character kind of reminds me of my beloved Sabriel. Then there's a huge moon there, glowing paper cranes and even a tiny dragon ♥ What more could you want?  Surprisingly, it's not even the cover that made me add this to my tbr shelf...that was thanks to the blurb! There was no way I could resist witches and magical moonlight leading to extraordinary magic. This book needs to be in my hands, pronto!

  7. Wow, this one sounds so magical! And I can totally understand why the character reminds you of Sabriel. Do you know if this is Middle Grade? I don't see anywhere in its description that says it is, but it definitely gives me that vibe. Nice pick!

  10. I haven't seen this one before, but I'm definitely intrigued! I'm actually quite interested in seeing what the reasoning will be for the families to actually give up their babies and for the witch to not send them back to their original family. With the added magic, dragon, and a Luna (I mean she has to be fantastic right?!?) this one looks very interesting.
