Harry Potter Moment #124

Harry Potter Moment of the Week

Harry Potter Moment of the Week is a  meme hosted by Leah @ Uncorked Thoughts  and Me @ Lunar Rainbows Reviews. The idea is to share a favorite moment, magical item, character, spell, quote, object from the books, films or J.K.Rowling herself!  How to join up &  upcoming topics here.

If you could change one thing from the second film, what would it be?

Well, the second book in the series has never been my favorite - and the second film certainly doesn't fare any better.  It's not that there's anything specific wrong with this installment, it's just that, well, there has to be a least favorite in a book series, and CoS is mine. As far as changing actual elements of the story, well...I considered going with more time spent in the Burrow, but the book accomplishes that nicely and I can understand why the filmmakers decided to cut those bits short.  I'd have liked for that scene in Borgin & Burkes where Harry spies on The Malfoys to make the cut, but in the grand scheme of things I suppose that one's not that much of a big deal.  In the end, I'm going with:

More screen time for Ginny - to better develop her character

The entire film series has been rather unfair to Ginny's character, as I've discussed at length previously, but I feel like if they'd introduced her character properly to the audiences right from her first year at Hogwarts, it would have made a difference - at least it would have established her importance straight away. As it is, she's barely a supporting character, with no indication of how important she is, and will become.

  1. Oh, I completely agree! Ginny is one of my favorite characters and I definitely feel that the movies didn't really do her justice. More screen time for her in CoS would have been a good thing.

  2. I agree. I hate the way Ginny was represented in the films. But I remember that for the longest of time CoS was my most favourite book. Also, I thought it was the funniest book in the series.

  3. Yep, that's how I feel too. The second is my least fav though not for anything huge thing I can put my finger on. I also absolutely agree with you about Ginny. She was the character most affected by the transition from book to movie. I would've loved to have seen more time with book Ginny :D She was such a great character with a lot of growth in the series.

  4. A very good point Micheline! Ginny was definitely underrated as a character in the movies, especially the second one where she played such a pivotal role. MORE GINNY!!!!

  5. This is absolutely true! I wish Ginny was the character we know and love from the books. I feel like they had so many opportunities in the movies and they failed almost everyone of them. Gah! Good choice. :D

  6. Ginny does get shortchanged in the films; her character gets downplayed significantly from the books. I'd expected her to have a lot more dialogue than she did in the CoS adaptation; I think the most lines she spoke were down in the Chamber, which is practically the end of the movie! o-O

  7. I am so with you! Ginny deserved so much more from the movies! She is one of my favorite characters and would have loved to see her get more screen time!

  8. I've been listening to the HP audiobooks with my fam and it surprised me how small of a role Ginny plays in some of the books. I'd just forgotten. And in the movies? I honestly barely remember her at all!

  9. I also wish they had lengthened Ginny's screen time or dealt with her introduction in the film a little better. Unless you've read the next books or watched the next movies, you wouldn't know to care about her after this movie ends. Apart from that though, I really enjoyed the movie. I do wish there were less spider scenes XD I always keep my eyes closed during those scenes :D

  11. You are so right. Ginny has never been my favorite character, but I dislike movie-Ginny more, because she hardly has any good moments on screen.
