Harry Potter Moment #119

Harry Potter Moment of the Week

Harry Potter Moment of the Week is a  meme hosted by Leah @ Uncorked Thoughts  and Me @ Lunar Rainbows Reviews. The idea is to share a favorite moment, magical item, character, spell, quote, object from the books, films or J.K.Rowling herself!  How to join up &  upcoming topics here.

This week is a free week, which means we get to pick the topic we want to discuss. I went through older topics that I might have missed back when I still hadn't discovered this MEME, but then I decided that what I really want to discuss with my fellow Potter-fans is:

What the bloody hell happened to Pottermore?!

I know that this isn't news anymore but I have to vent. I might not have been the biggest user of Pottermore in the past, but I did enjoy exploring through the site when I had time to kill. It was the closest thing to actually going to Hogwarts that we had! Sure it wasn't quite what we'd all expected it would be initially, but we had some fun there - especially last year when Faith and I made playing a part of Harry Potter Month. It felt like the perfect way to celebrate Harry's birthday and I was already looking forward for an excuse to play it again next July ;)

But then...in September of this year, Pottermore seemed to suffer from ingesting a poorly brewed Polyjuice Potion. Everything that I loved about the site seems to have vanished.  Instead, it looks like...well to be honest, I'm still not entirely sure what the hell it looks like. Is it a Harry Potter news site? Is it JKR's personal website now? Is it supposed to promote the new play? WHAT IS IT'S PURPOSE?!

I'm sad because I never got to explore all of the books, having only made it to OotP, but since HBP and DH are two of my favorite books, I was really looking forward to exploring those! What I really don't get is why they didn't leave the old site alone and launch this new site as a separate project altogether?! I'm seriously hoping that JKR has something up her sleeve with this move - like possibly finally giving us our HP Encyclopedia (which I will wait for till the day I die!) - but if that isn't the case, I am majorly bummed out.

What do you guys think about the new site?

  1. I was also extremely saddened and disappointed at the change. They seemed to have done some research and discovered that the majority of those who use Pottermore are grown-ups and apparently decided that they need something more 'adult'. It's so stupid! They don't get us at all.I really hate it nowadays - especially because they use images of actors in place of pictures of the characters - but as I understand they are not going to change it. It'll stay like that and we won't get to experience our online Hogwarts any more((((

    1. Yeah...I figured that they wouldn't got back now, but it still really bums me out! They could have just left the old side as-is and then add all this new content in another part of the site! I'm really sad that we won't get to experience Hogwarts online anymore :(

  2. Awww, you never got to finish it?? That sucks :( I don't see why they had to get rid of everything that it was based on - couldn't they keep it and then also add the news features and stuff? Bleh :(

    1. No, I was a slow-poke I guess. I just never thought that there was any rush...I assumed that the site would stay on forever, as sites usually do! Womp womp. Exactly, that what I wish they would have done!! Oh well :(

  3. I know! That's crazy. I hadn't even gotten through all the books. They say they are going to make it more interactive again, but I just wish they would have expanded instead of made it just a news and pictures site. I was just thinking about Harry Potter Month and how we won't be able to do that as part of it this year.

    1. YES! Why couldn't they just expand and leave the other stuff like it was! We'll never get to finish our magical education Jaclyn!! D: And going on for HP Month was such a highlight last year, I'm sad that we won't get to do all of that together again this year!

  4. Oh no! I haven't been on Pottermore since HP month, lol, but the interactive aspect and getting to kind of experience the books were what made it so much fun. I hope they find a way to bring that back; I only got up to PoA. :/

    1. Oh well let me know if ever you check out the new site - it's such a bummer! Especially with how much fun we had going back during HP Month! I'd only *just* finished GoF this past Summer D:

  5. Agh, I'm sadly not a true Harry Potter fan. I only started reading them last year!! (And have read the majority this year. >_>) I just grew up on Narnia instead...but I totally get the agony of having them ruin favourite sites. BOO. Sometimes I really wish people would not try to "fix" what isn't broken. -_-
Thanks for stopping by @ Paper Fury!

    1. Aw don't say that! I think that you ARE a true HP fan, no matter when you discover the series! And there's no shame in growing up with Narnia ♥ I agree 100%! Thanks for stopping by :)

  6. I didn't go on Pottermore much after the initial year. I enjoyed getting my wand and getting sorted but after that I didn't enjoy it much. I have yet to go on there since they changed it, but I did hear about them changing it so I went in and saved my Certificate that showed my Pottermore name, house, wand, and points. I'm kind of scared to see how it's changed.

But I love this feature--I might have to join in in the future!
