Harry Potter Moment #104

Harry Potter Moment of the Week

Harry Potter Moment of the Week is a  meme hosted by Leah @ Uncorked Thoughts  and Me @ Lunar Rainbows Reviews. The idea is to share a favorite moment, magical item, character, spell, quote, object from the books, films or J.K.Rowling herself!  How to join up &  upcoming topics here.

If you could change one thing in the first film, what would it be?

The first films are a bit trickier to gripe about because the books were much smaller, and so adapting them into films without gutting them was much easier. Of course, when you're obsessed with the books, it's easy to think of little moments that got missed XD

One of my favorite such moment from Philosopher's Stone that was cut from the movie:

Snape's Potion Riddle

When you know that every teacher in school was protecting the Philosopher's Stone, and the producers of the movie decided to keep every single task, except for Snape's, it seems a bit odd.  And just having Hagrid say that Snape was one of the teachers protecting the Stone wasn't enough. It's not like that scene was especially long or would have been challenging to film. Plus, I think riddles are fun and this was another clever challenge for Harry and Hermione to get through!

  1. Oh, that's a great pick! I remember reading the first book after seeing the film and being surprised by the potions task, since, like you said, all of the other challenges were kept for the movie. I also love how Hermione effortlessly applied her awesome logic to solve it; I would have ended up drinking poison, lol.

    1. It's so odd to me that this is the only task they cut out^^ it's clever, it shows how brilliant both Snape and Hermione are and it would have taken like 5 minutes of film time! LOL I would have drunk poison too - but then again, so would Harry without Hermione's help XD

  2. I enjoy that scene a lot too. They passed right over the troll as well, but that wasn't a big deal since the troll was already passed out on the floor and they didn't have to do anything to pass it. That task was specifically designed for Hermione, and I thought it was wonderful to read.

    1. It really was wonderful to read - I've always been a fan of riddles but the two good ones from the series (this one and the one with the Sphinx in GoF) never made it to the films...

  3. This was an excellent part of the book, it also made my HPMOTW (I couldn't resist, I had to put more than one)! It would've been really great to see Hermione and Harry work this out, I know it made me reconsider Hermione's house haha

    Here's my HPMOTW!
