Remus Lupin Character Spotlight

Harry Potter Month
Harry Potter Month is a yearly event taking place throughout the month of July, to coincide with Harry Potter's birthday. Hosted by Faith @ GeekyZooGirl and myself here at Lunar Rainbows Reviews, the aim is to fill the month with all things Potter.  There will be themed posts, discussions, art and fans rereading the books and rewatching the movies, all of which will earn the participants House-Points towards the House Cup at the end of the month. Hi everyone! Today I wanted to give a special shoutout to the one character in the series who shares a birthday with yours truly: Remus Lupin. I can't really explain to you all why this small fact makes me so happy, but odds are, it's because Lupin is one of my absolute favorite characters in the series. It's like the moment that I found that out, he became even more of a kindred spirit than he already was. It makes me happy that JKR picked that date, out of all the days to 'give birth' to Remus Lupin.

Remus Lupin, Birthday Buddy: A Spotlight.

Then there's the fact that he's a Werewolf and ruled by the moon.  Well, his birthdate means that he would be a Pisces, which is a sign ruled by the moon...which kind of means that I'm ruled by the moon too haha! I know that as a Werewolf, he fears the moon, but irl, I've always been partial to the night and I have this thing about the moon. Case in point? My blog name ;)  I even tend to like the fact that in Winter, the nights are longer, and you get more darkness to appreciate the moon, but that might be the homebody/introvert part of me talking too XD

So to sort of 'celebrate this', I wanted to do a character spotlight on Mr Moony and share some of my favorite things about him! But first, on to his character bio:

Professor Remus John Lupin, O.M. (First Class), (10 March, 1960 – 2 May, 1998), also known as Moony, was a half-blood wizard and the only son of Lyall and Hope Lupin (née Howel). He was afflicted with lycanthropy during his childhood, as Fenrir Greyback's revenge against Lyall. He attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and was Sorted into Gryffindor house. During his school years, he was one of the Marauders, best friends with Sirius Black, James Potter, and Peter Pettigrew. Together they created the Marauder's Map.
After Hogwarts, Remus and his friends joined the Order of the Phoenix and fought in the First Wizarding War. However, Pettigrew betrayed James and Lily Potter to Lord Voldemort and Remus had lost all of his closest friends in various ways by the end of the First Wizarding War, though he and Sirius Black later reclaimed their friendship. Remus taught at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as Professor of Defence Against the Dark Arts during the 1993–1994 school year. He was also a professor of Harry Potter, James's son, whom he taught how to conjure a corporeal Patronus, but resigned after Severus Snape revealed to the public that Remus was a werewolf. He fought against Death Eaters once more in the Second Wizarding War, during which he lost his friend Sirius. In 1997, Remus married fellow Order member Nymphadora Tonks and had a son, Edward Remus "Teddy" Lupin. Remus fought at the Battle of Hogwarts, during which his wife was murdered by Bellatrix Lestrange. Remus was also murdered by Death Eater, Antonin Dolohov, during the same battle in 1998. He was avenged by Filius Flitwick.
He briefly appeared again through the Resurrection Stone for Harry, along with James Potter, Lily Potter, and Sirius Black in 1998. - Source
Favorite Lupin Moments include:
  • His younger self being the voice of reason for the more reckless James and Sirius - not to mention his friendship with both.
  • Being one of the inventors of the wonder that is the Marauder's Map. ♥
  • Overcoming adversity as a Werewolf and going on to become a respected wizard (Order of Merlin, first class!) and member of the Order of the Phoenix.
  • Being THE BEST DADA teacher to ever grace Hogwarts. I was SO heartbroken when he left.
  • Being a mentor and positive influence on Harry - and teaching Harry how to fight off Dementors *shudder*
  • Giving us the glory that was Severus Snape in Neville's grandmother's clothing in his classroom.
*snicker*
  • Saving Harry from Snape while he was using the Map, saving the Map in the process as smooth as can be and then returning it to Harry at the end of the year.
  • Having an epic bromance with Sirius Black that would cause massive fangirling across the world.
  • Going on to put his trust in Snape because Dumbledore said so, despite their history. That trust is Dumbledore makes me happy :)
  • Making Harry Teddy's Godfather. #feels
  • Sacrificing himself to take down Voldemort and his army of evil. *cries*
*********************************************************************************

After the ginormous loss that was Sirius, I really wish that Lupin would have been able to stay with us, for Harry's sake but at the same time, I'm sure that the relationship between Harry and Teddy was all the more special because of their shared bond and loss. I mourn Lupin more than most of the other characters in the series - he's right up there with Sirius, Dumbledore and Fred.

Do you love Lupin as much as I do? Share your favorite moments with me!
Also, I want to know: do you share a birthday with anyone in the HP World?

  1. Wonderful post! I've loved Lupin ever since the first DADA lesson. I love his mild yet strong personality and my heart breaks whenever I think about his tragic story. I mean, he's been suffering from lycanthropy since he was a child! How awful is that?

My favourite Lupin moments include his unforgettable first Boggart lesson (of course!), the scene in the Shrieking Shack, his return as part of the advance guard in OotP, his talk with Harry at Christmas in HBP, when he mentioned how James referred to his lycanthropy as his little furry problem, making people think that he had a badly behaved rabbit, and I'm pretty sure I've forgotten some more wonderful moments.

As for my birthday, the closest character I share a birthday with is Professor Flitwick. His birthday is on October 17 and mine is on October 16. I think it's quite fitting, because I consider myself a Ravenclaw))

    1. Thank you Farida^^ I know and I agree comepletely with you: Lupin's character is one of THE most tragic figures in the series D:

Of course, I LOVE all of the moments you mentioned as favorites ♥ Pretty much ALL of Lupin's moments are pure gold!!

Oh cool, that's really close for you and Flitwick - one day apart :D Especially since you're both Ravenclaws ;) Thanks for sharing!! xx

  2. That's so cool that you share a birthday with him!

Lupin is one of my favorite characters as well. He's such a great mentor to Harry and even when he's not in school anymore he is almost always the peace keeper. Like between Sirius and Molly, Sirius and Snape, Snape and Harry, and so on. Usually when someone is being over dramatic or over emotional he's the one left dealing with it, like when Molly was traumatized by the boggart. Really, I could just go on forever talking about how he's probably the nicest character in the books.

Best moment in the books has to be when he's teaching them how to deal with boggarts. Even though he doesn't hate Snape as much as Sirius does he still must have found Neville's boggart as funny as we did :D When he left at the end of PoA I was sad, I was like "He's leaving?!" I also love any information and flashbacks we get with the Marauders <3

Great post spotlighting a great character.

  3. That is so awesome that you share a birthday with Remus! He's one of the big reasons why PoA is my favorite book/movie (the other being Sirius, of course, lol). He had such a hard life, yet he carried on with such admirable dignity. And his relationship with Harry is one of my all-time favorite things about the series ever. —

  4. Lupin! I cannot count the ways in which I love Remus Lupin. (minus that bit in Deathly Hallows when he considers leaving his family but then Harry snaps some sense into him.) I love that he is the best DADA professor Harry had in his time at Hogwarts. Harry learned so much from Lupin, magic and otherwise. He was one of the first real father figures Harry got and Lupin filled that role so well.
    What a great post, Micheline!

  5. Lupin is such an awesome character! And I agree with Harry, he was the best DADA teacher. Lucky you for sharing your birthday month with him :D

  6. That's an awesome character to share a birthday with. I, in comparison, apparently share a birthday with Dudley Dursley :/ not quite so awesome!

I love Lupin, more even than Sirius. One of the saddest things is thinking about when he was a kid, before the Wolfsbane potion, when all his transformations would have been agony :( Despite everything he goes through, he's so understanding and, well, just nice, though you could definitely understand he might not want to be after everything.

  7. Lupin was always one of my favourites too. He was such an amazing teacher, and the fact that Snape ruined that for him is one of the many reasons why I can't stand Snape. Snape knew this was the first worthwhile job he'd managed to secure for a while, the first job that also meant he had somewhere to stay and he could afford clothes that weren't moth-eaten, and he ruined it. Snape is gross.

I think I'm always going to love Sirius just that little bit more - Sirius is probably my favourite character in the whole series - but I do love Lupin a lot. How fun that you and he share a birthday! :D

  8. STOP MAKING ME EMOTIONAL, MICHELINE. I don't think I could ever make peace with the fact that he died. I was heartbroken when Sirius died (since he was my fav) but I was even more heartbroken when Lupin died because it left Harry with nobody. I felt like both Sirius and Remus had become father figures to Harry and also helped him feel a connection to his actual parents and it broke my heart that they both had to die :(

Anyway, I am going to stop rambling about why I am sad that they both had to die. This is a fantastic post and a great way to honor Remus, Micheline! :) I love all of those things about Remus and he is still so very much missed <3

  9. I'm jealous that you share your birthday with someone in the HP world!! If only I were born a day earlier... Remus is an excellent person to share a birthday with! I'm rereading Prisoner of Azkaban right now and it's just amazing how much of a difference Remus is making in his students' lives by believing in them and working on hands-on practices, unlike most Hogwarts professors who set long pointless essays as homework. If only he had been able to stay on for longer to continue making a difference... sad :(:(

  10. Fantastic post!! I just love Lupin...though obviously not as much as you ;) I love the positive influence he had on Harry the most and the part that you said he trusted in Dumbledore. He was truly loyal to the Order of the Phoenix. I agree that he had to overcome a lot, and became an amazing wizard. My favorite part of Lupin though will always be that he taught Harry to expel the dementors.

My birthday is closest to Hermione's. I'm the 14th of September, and she is the 19th. It makes sense too in that she is the character that I am most like.

  11. Amazing post Micheline :D! I love Lupin so much! He is one of my favorite characters in the whole series. Not my favorite though because that slot is reserved for Sirius =D. I love how his being a werewolf made him so judged by others and discriminated and even with that he ended up being this badass respected wizard. I especially love his self-loathing for himself (as bad as that sounds) because it gave him so much depth and allowed for so much character development. I also adored his relationship with Sirius and James. They were best of friends and I loved how they were there for him no matter what, even if it they had to turn into a dog and a deer.

I think my favorite thing about him though was his relationship with Tonks. I really wish we got to see more of that because they were my OTP even over Harry and Ginny. I loved them together so much and was devasted when they died *sobs*. They were so great together because I believe Tonks really helped him move past his self-loathing and helped him see the good in himself.
