An Ode to Sirius Black

Harry Potter Month
Harry Potter Month is a yearly event taking place throughout the month of July, to coincide with Harry Potter's birthday. Hosted by Faith @ GeekyZooGirl and myself here at Lunar Rainbows Reviews, the aim is to fill the month with all things Potter.  There will be themed posts, discussions, art and fans rereading the books and rewatching the movies, all of which will earn the participants House-Points towards the House Cup at the end of the month. Helllloooo fellow Potterheads! Today I'm going to be gushing about my (our) beloved Sirius Black, because in two Harry Potter Months and weekly Harry Potter Moments, I clearly feel that I haven't done enough of that already ;D  In case it wasn't already painfully obvious, I freaking love the guy, but then again, I do have a thing for tortured rebels. Here are some of the reasons why Sirius Black has made a hopeless fangirl out of me:

An Ode to Sirius Black

  • For starters, Sirius was the Black sheep (hihi) of his family and that's always been oddly appealing to me. Where they were all vile and filled with pure-blood mania, Sirius was willing to befriend Muggle-Borns and Blood-Traitors alike...not to mention the occasional Werewolf ;)
  • Despite his family's wild and mostly offensive beliefs, Sirius still grew up with a (mostly) strong moral compass. Sure he's reckless and has a wicked sense of humor, but in his defence, Snape was trying to nose around (with that big nose of his) and get poor Lupin into trouble for something that wasn't Lupin's fault to begin with. Nevertheless, it's not my favorite Sirius memory, but he, he was young and impulsive.
  • Sirius sounds like he was very much legendary when he was at Hogwarts. He was cool, dreamy, brooding and he and his friends got up to all kinds of mischief. Hell, the formed The Marauders and basically owned the school. Not to mention the fact that they created THE MOST AWESOME MAP OF LIFE, but they were all ANIMAGUS!! That's insane! Like, as much as Harry, Ron and Hermione accomplished, and as brilliant as Hermione is, none of them ever became Animagus!
  • More to the point, the friendship between that foursome is seriously epic. Yes stupid Wormtail went and messed it all up, but before that those boys were doing anything and everything for one another. They were solid as a rock and after the fact, the three remaining good Marauders remain just as devoted.
  • But back to the man of the hour: Sirius is the perfect mixture of brooding, dark rebel with a heart. He's loyal to a fault, he's reckless but he's got a heart as big as Hogwarts.  I love how he became of part of James' family growing up, how he loved Lily just as much when she and James became a unit and how devoted, protective and loving he was to Harry. ♥
  • Sirius lost so much but he never let it extinguish his light. After losing his two best friends, suspecting his other best friend of treason and finally discovering that another friend was the traitor, the poor soul gets sent to AZKABAN and has to suffer 13 years there, as an innocent, knowing full well that his best friends' son is out there on his own. I can't even imagine how heartbreaking and awful that all must have been for him but despite that, he comes out a little more crazy but no less loving and devoted.
  • Sirius is the classic tortured hero with a touch of anti-hero that I tend to obsess about quite easily. Of course, it doesn't hurt that he was brought to life by the glorious Gary Oldman
  • Sirius is unbelievably brave and he lived his life unapologetically his way. This started at a very young age and I find that terribly inspiring.  He showed bravery by being himself, believing in what he chose to and not letting his family dictate any of it. He was brave to explore Hogwarts as he did, and to turn himself into an Animagus. He was brave when he joined The Order of the Phoenix, and when he fought against You-Know-Who. He was brave when his best friends died and he went looking for them, when he faced Azkaban and of course, when he escaped. O.O
  • Sirius is a BAMF. And I'm not even going to explain myself here, I'm just going to show you all this:
  • And finally, Sirius was a father-figure that Harry so desperately needed. I mean, I know Harry had Dumbledore and Hagrid, but he also needed someone who knew his parents, someone who tied him to them and made him feel like there was a connection there. His parents had chosen Sirius as Harry's godfather and I know that meant the world to the poor kid. After everything Sirius had suffered, after everything he lost, I also know that Sirius needed Harry just as much as Harry needed him. Thinking about that makes my heart swell and it also makes me thankful that they found each other, even if their time together was much too short.

And that my friends is my Ode to Sirius Black. For all of these reasons^^ and more, I love him to pieces! What about you guys?

Sirius is life! I love him to pieces, even if he's a reckless dumbass some of the time. Like you said, despite everything, he never allowed life to beat him down; he and Harry were the best thing ever even when it wasn't meant to be.. He's just amazing.

As for Hermione not being an Animagus... I think she never felt like she needed to be one. She probably could have been, easy, and must have looked it up 'just in case' as is her thing, but she never had the need to prove herself in that way. I bet she could, would and did do it later in life, just to challenge herself :)

    1. Sirius IS life. Sure he has his faults, but his faults are kind of perfect for his character too, especially considering all he's been through. And YES: Harry and Sirius were the best thing ever ♥♥♥

Oh and I agree completely, I know that Hermione, Harry and Ron all could have become Animagus if they wanted/needed to, especially considering how she brewed Polyjuice Potion in her 2nd year and Harry conjured a full-bodied Patronus in his 3rd year! They just didn't need to, but it doesn't stop me from wishing that they had, so I could see what they'd all turn into. All the same, it makes The Marauders impressive for being able to - they were just as impressive as our golden trio ;)

  4. Sirius is fantastic!! It's weird to me how everyone always says Harry is like James throughout the books. I see more comparisons of James with Ron and Sirius with Harry. James took Sirius in when his home life stunk as Ron does with Harry. James pines after Lily and defends her to Snape as Ron does with Hermione. The story says Harry looks like James which makes sense, but everyone is also always saying how he also has 'a certain disregard for the rules' like James, but that fits with Sirius as well. I think Sirius is the best Godfather Harry could've had. You're right, he did have Dumbledore and Hagrid, but Sirius GOT Harry. I'm reading OotP right now and Sirius is sending letters to Harry telling him that he knows how frustrated he is and not to do anything rash LOL. Excellent post! You can never gush too much about Sirius <3 I love the passion these characters cause in us.

    1. You're 100% right Jaclyn, I see a LOT of Sirius in Harry as well, and yes Ron has a lot of similarities to James too! Sirius is definitely THE BEST Godfather Harry could have ever had ♥ Yes Harry had other father figures, but the kinship between Sirius and Harry was something else! LOL I'm happy that all of you love Sirius as much as I do and don't mind the CONSTANT gushing XD I do too^^

  5. I just love Sirius! This is an amazing ode, you've reminded me of all the reasons I love Sirius. I especially love what Sirius did for Harry. Yeah, Harry had other father figures, but Sirius was the one that understood him most. Sometimes Sirius forgot Harry wasn't James, but Sirius loved Harry something fierce and it's beautiful.
And you're right, as awesome as The Golden Trio was, the Marauders were probably just as amazing, if not more so. (Though I expect if Hermione and Harry had tried they could have become Animagus too.)

    1. Sirius really was the father figure that TRULY GOT Harry. It's true that sometimes for Sirius the lines became blurred between James and Harry but after dealing with James' loss in AZKABAN I think it's totally understandable. His love for Harry went above and beyond and like you said: it was fierce and beautiful ♥ Oh and I definitely think that the Golden Trio ALL could have become Animagus, but I think it's cool that The Marauders did, it shows that they were just as impressive ;)

  6. Oh god, I got choked up reading this. Wonderful post! Sirius is still one of my favorite characters in the whole series, top 5 for sure. Partially because I totally would have been obsessed with teen-him as teen-me, and partially because of all the things you just listed. He's that combination of snarky, irreverent, caring, and wickedly smart that I just can't resist. RIP.

  7. LOVE Sirius, I remember him being one of my favorite characters and I was so heartbroken in The Order of the Phoenix and I was sort of in denial, aha. But I agree with all of these reasons, he really was a great character and I loved how well fleshed out he was as a character.

    1. I think that I'm STILL in denial about the events at the end of OotP :*( I don't think I will EVER be ok with that. But yeah, he is all kinds of amazing and I love how he isn't perfect but every bit of his personality is what makes him awesome!

  8. This is the BEST post EVER, Micheline! ❤❤❤ It feels like Ally and I are writing about Sirius in our HP MotW posts every week, too, hehe! But that's because, for every single reason you so perfectly list here, Sirius is so. Freaking. AWESOME. And when Gary Oldman's casting was announced, I knew that movie Sirius would be just as compelling a character as he is in the books. ❤ Thank you, thank you, thank you for spotlighting my all-time favorite HP character!! :D

  9. Fantastic post! I love Sirius, in the books he was fantastic but Gary Oldman really brought him to life for me. Would love if JK did a book about his earlier life.

    1. Thank you Heather! I agree, Gary Oldman took my love for Sirius to a whole other level! I'd LOVE a book about his earlier life too, in fact, I kind of NEED a Marauders book :)

  10. Siriuuuuuuuuus! D: I'm never going to be over his death, never ever. I always used to say I'd find it too hard to pick a favourite HP character, but actually whenever someone does ask me that question Sirius is always the first person that pops into my head. I think I just have a soft spot for misunderstood heroes. Sirius's story is always going to break my heart; being imprisoned for 13 years for something he didn't do, having everyone, including his remaining best friend, think he'd done it, only to escape and then have to hide in his childhood home, surrounded by all those horrid memories, and then be killed before his name could be cleared. *weeps* It's just not fair!

Great post, Micheline! And I agree about Gary Oldman - he did a wonderful job as Sirius!

  11. I would have enjoyed meeting a teenage Sirius Black, I think. I'd probably be in love with him but would have been afraid to talk to him because he was too cool! :)
I like his adult self, too - I know he's been through a terrible ordeal and he's more somber but he's wonderful to Harry.
And yeah, Gary Oldman <3 :)
