2015 End of the Year Survey

2015 End of the Year Survey
This survey was originally created by Jaime @ Perpetual Page Turner and takes place once a year in December as a way to wrap up our bookish year and look ahead to the new year.

2015 Reading Stats

First book you read in 2015: Owl and The Japanese Circus - A Female Indiana Jones? Yes Please!

Last book you read in 2015: I ended this year perfectly with Ready Player One - right after I finished The Abhorsen Trilogy...but more on these^^ below.

Number Of Books You Read: 35

Number of Re-Reads: 0

Genre You Read The Most From: Fantasy

Best in Books

1. Best Book You Read In 2015? The most I can narrow this one down is: The Abhorsen TrilogyBlue Lily, Lily BlueQueen of Shadows.

2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t? Eleanor & Park - I really enjoyed Fangirl and thought I'd turned a new page with contemporaries...but E&P just really fell flat for me :(

 3. Most surprising (in a good way or bad way) book you read?  Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater because I wasn't sure if I would enjoy it but ended up completely falling in love with it.

 4. Book You “Pushed” The Most People To Read (And They Did)? Queen of Shadows but everyone was going to read that one anyway.  I pushed Sabriel (The Abhorsen Trilogy)the most, and I know a ton of people added it to their tbr because of my constant gushing but I don't think anyone has read it yet *glares*

5. Best series you started in 2015? Best Sequel of 2015? Best Series Ender of 2015? The answer to all three questions is The Abhorsen Trilogy. Sabriel was the best starter to a series, Lirael was the best sequel and Abhorsen was the best ender. This series ruined me!

6. Favorite new author you discovered in 2015? Gartth Nix, Ernest ClineRenée Ahdieh, Naomi Novik

7. Best book from a genre you don’t typically read/was out of your comfort zone? A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness. I was swept away in by the beautiful prose and poignant subject matter.

8. Most action-packed/thrilling/unputdownable book of the year? Queen.Of.Fucking.Shadows.

9. Book You Read In 2015 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year? The Abhorsen Trilogy - I'll be rereading this series many, many times, you can be sure of that!

10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2015? Blue Lily, Lily Blue and Uprooted

11. Most memorable character of 2015? My Fire-Breathing Bitch Queen of course. Oh and Sam from The Wolves of Mercy Falls

12. Most beautifully written book read in 2015? The Wrath & The Dawn - that prose was like something out of another world!

13. Most Thought-Provoking/ Life-Changing Book of 2015? A Monster Calls - That kind of story stays with you long after you've read the final page...

 14. Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2015 to finally read? Ready. Player. One. As a child of the 80's, a geek and a fan of sci-fi, I'm honestly ashamed that I wasn't aware of the awesome I was missing! Also?  Alanna: The First Adventure. Man, I wish I could have read this in Middle-School or High School.

15. Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2015? ''Does the walker choose the path, or the path the walker?'' -Garth Nix

16.Shortest & Longest Book You Read In 2015? Shortest: The Eleventh Metal by Brandon Sanderson. Longest: Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas

17. Book That Shocked You The Most? Queen of Shadows - that killer twist at the end had me reeling for days.

18. OTP OF THE YEAR (you will go down with this ship!) RONAN+ADAM FOR LIFE! (Shout out to Aelin+Ronan though since they made me jump ships - a previously unheard of phenomenon)

19. Favorite Non-Romantic Relationship Of The Year? Sam+Cole, Aelin+Lysandra, Wade+H and unfortunately (so far) Ronan+Adam.

20. Favorite Book You Read in 2015 From An Author You’ve Read Previously? The Alloy of Law because returning to a beloved world of Sanderson's is like reuniting with an old friend. And A Darker Shade of Magic/The Archived because Schwab is a magical chameleon.

21. Best Book You Read In 2015 That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else/Peer Pressure? Grave Mercy. It was getting embarrassing that I'd never read it so naturally I had to fix that. I'm glad I did! Now I need to finish the rest of the series...

22. Newest fictional crush from a book you read in 2015? Sam of The Wolves of Mercy Falls.  A tortured bookish musician who can buy the perfect dress for his girlfriend. SWOON.

23. Best 2015 debut you read? The Wrath & The Dawn. I had a few reservations before starting but I was taken in almost instantly and I loved every second of it!

24. Best Worldbuilding/Most Vivid Setting You Read This Year? The Abhorsen Trilogy. Which probably explains why it's one of my absolute favorites this year. The Old Kingdom is rich, darkly atmospheric and vividly magical. So.Much.Love!

25. Book That Put A Smile On Your Face/Was The Most FUN To Read? A Darker Shade of Magic. There's no other way to describe it. Sure it was dangerous and violent but I had a blast through it all!

26. Book That Made You Cry Or Nearly Cry in 2015? A Monster Calls. I wept. It was intense.

27. Hidden Gem Of The Year? Owl and the Japanese Circus It's like I said: a female 'Indiana Jones' facing a wide variety of supernatural monsters on the quest for a magical artifact. Win.

28. Book That Crushed Your Soul? Queen of Shadows. There were many 'therapy sessions' following that ending, I kid you not! Thanks Lee ♥

29. Most Unique Book You Read In 2015? Uprooted. The magical system, setting, friendship and world made this one stand apart. Not to mention those evil woods O.O  *shudder* Also? Ready Player One. The concept, dystopian world and virtual reality all mixed in together is crazy-cool.

30. Book That Made You The Most Mad (doesn’t necessarily mean you didn’t like it)? Eleanor & Park. No comment.

Your Blogging/Bookish Life

1. New favorite book blog you discovered in 2015? I can never remember when I discover that weird? I don't want to mention someone as newly discovered and then having them see this and being like: you started following me in 2014 O.O  so I'll skip this one and simply say: If I visit your blog regularly, I love you and you are awesome.

2. Favorite review that you wrote in 2015? Queen of Shadows or Sabriel - What can I say?! I love gushing.

3. Best discussion/non-review post you had on your blog? My Harry Potter Fandom Wishlist post and my discussion post where I discuss Rereading/Rewatching were quite good, if I do say so myself ;)

4. Best event that you participated in (author signings, festivals, virtual events, memes, etc.)? Obviously BEA15 takes the cake here. I made some of my best bookish memories at this event and this year was no different! Me and Giselle had a blast roadtripping solo for the first time this year to and from the event and while there, rooming with Rashika and Amy was a total blast.  The event was, as usual filled with amazing bloggers, books and authors ♥

5. Best moment of bookish/blogging life in 2015? MEETING MAGGIE STIEFVATER!!!

6. Most challenging thing about blogging or your reading life this year? Finding time to read when work or real life gets hectic. Thank the book gods for audiobooks!

7. Most Popular Post This Year On Your Blog (whether it be by comments or views)? My Announcing Harry Potter Month got the most views and comments :D

8. Post You Wished Got A Little More Love? My newest edition of Let's Discuss... My other discussion posts got way more comments than this one did and I don't know why. I was really excited for it before posting but then... *crickets*

9. Best bookish discovery (book related sites, book stores, etc.)? When my cousin told me I could check out audiobooks online through my local library and listen to them on my mobile. My commute to work was forever changed. Now I'm all like:

10.  Did you complete any reading challenges or goals that you had set for yourself at the beginning of this year? I completed my GR reading challenge for the first time in a few years...after I reduced my goal recently >.<

Looking Ahead

1. One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2015 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2016? Well, since I started Winter right at the end of 2015, I'll skip that one and go with: Shadows of SelfIlluminaeEvery Word. To name a few.

2. Book You Are Most Anticipating For 2016 (non-debut)? The Raven King. I need it like air, even though I know it might just kill me.

3. 2016 Debut You Are Most Anticipating? Into the Dim and The Dragon Round instantly come to mind.

 4. Series Ending/A Sequel You Are Most Anticipating in 2016? A Court of Mist and Fury, The Rose & The Dagger, A Gathering of Shadows, and last but certainly not least Throne of Glass #5

5. One Thing You Hope To Accomplish Or Do In Your Reading/Blogging Life In 2016? Buy less books and read all of the awesome ones I already own.

6. A 2016 Release You’ve Already Read & Recommend To Everyone? Truthwitch. Even though it didn't blow me away like I hoped it would, I still really enjoyed it and I want to compare notes with everyone!

Happy 2016 Everyone!!

Harry Potter Moment #123

Harry Potter Moment of the Week

Harry Potter Moment of the Week is a  meme hosted by Leah @ Uncorked Thoughts  and Me @ Lunar Rainbows Reviews. The idea is to share a favorite moment, magical item, character, spell, quote, object from the books, films or J.K.Rowling herself!  How to join up &  upcoming topics here.

Happy New Year's Eve everybody!  Hopefully everyone is recuperated from Christmas and ready to have some fun tonight! Please be safe if you're going out - and if you're staying in please chill responsibly ;) I will be ringing in the New Year in a truly nerdy fashion by (finally) going to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens :D  Here's our last Harry Potter Moment topic of 2015:

Favorite wand from the series? (Not one you'd want for yourself but your favorite out of the ones we learned about.)

Literally NO ONE will be surprised that I couldn't possibly narrow it down to just one.  Narrowing things down just isn't my strong suit.  Also, I doubt anyone of you will be surprised by my answer(s):

Harry's Wand and the Elder Wand

I went with Harry's Wand first because that sucker was a life saver. Time and time again that Wand just owned it.  When it chose Harry, we had no way of knowing how special it would end up being.  I've always loved how the core comes from Dumbledore's Phoenix especially...and looking up the meaning of a Holly Core just shows how much attention to detail JKR put into the smallest of details...

And speaking of much as The Elder Wand is WAY more trouble than it's worth, it's also wicked cool.  I mean, the core comes from a Thestral!  I love those creatures, despite their sort of morbid vibe. Obviously, you'd need to keep your mouth shut if ever you got your hands on this wand - like Dumbledore did. Even though I wouldn't want it for myself, I'm still fascinated by it and it's origin.

Fandom Mashups #33

Fandom Mashups
Fandom Mashups is an original feature here at Lunar Rainbows Reviews.  The idea is that every week, I propose a unique fictional scenario and then build my personal dream team of five fictional characters from five different fandoms to complete the task!  Anyone is welcome to join in on the fandom fun - all I ask is that you link back to me somewhere in your post :)

Hello all! How was everyone's Christmas? I had a wonderful time with the boyfriend, family, friends and the kitties of course ♥ Since the 26th things have been quiet with everyone recuperating from too many indulgences but today we're having a Wii Party :D Video games will be played - often poorly - but we'll have fun which is the point isn't it? With 2016 closer than ever, here's our topic this week:

With the new year close at hand, you've decided that self-improvement is the way to go. But you need some inspiration. Which characters would you pick to inspire you to better yourself.

Harry Potter

If my hero of all heroes can't inspire me, who will?! Harry truly does inspire me to be brave, to follow my heart and to always remember the importance of love.

Kaladin Stormblessed

Naturally, I need another of my all-time favorite heroes here and Kaladin fits the bill. Kaladin went from respected soldier, to slave and back again. He inspires me to never give up, always keep fighting and never lose hope.

Aelin Galathynius

And the ultimate hero train keeps rolling. Aelin is an inspiration to always remember who you truly are. Even when things seemed darkest, she always kept going. She made and remade herself into a fire-breathing bitch queen and made me want to be one too ;)

The Doctor

The Doctor just sort of inspires everyone he meets I think, so how could he not make this list.  He's an inspiration to be a better person, to always lend a helping hand whenever you can...and to live every day like he might show up and take us away ♥

Blue Sargent

Blue could have easily gotten an inferiority complex from being the only non-gifted member of her family, but instead what does she do? She makes herself useful with the abilities she does have, she embarks on a spectacular mission into magic, AND she befriends four of the most amazing boys ever. How is that not inspiring?!

Harry Potter Moment #122

Harry Potter Moment of the Week

Harry Potter Moment of the Week is a  meme hosted by Leah @ Uncorked Thoughts  and Me @ Lunar Rainbows Reviews. The idea is to share a favorite moment, magical item, character, spell, quote, object from the books, films or J.K.Rowling herself!  How to join up &  upcoming topics here.

Happy Christmas Eve Everyone!  My family has always gotten together on Christmas Eve rather than Christmas Day. It used to be that in the evening, we'd go to my grandmother and grandfather's house and watch them open their gifts from all their children and grandchildren. Those are some of the happiest memories of my childhood ♥  Now that my grandparents are older, my mom and her husband have taken up the tradition, so tonight, around 50 aunts, uncles, cousins and their children will crowd into my mom's house and hug, laugh, eat, drink, tell stories and take plenty of pictures all through the night :)  Whether you all are celebrating tonight, tomorrow or both, I wish you and yours nothing but the happiest of Christmas cheer, lots of love, good food and bookish surprises! And since we'd all love to spend Christmas at Hogwarts, let's see what kind of trouble we could get up to today to make our dear Harry proud:

What long lost magical item do you find in The Room of Requirement?

This topic is perfection.  And I actually looked up a list of all of the magical items from the Harry Potter world to come up with an answer here.  After eliminating items I really want, like the Marauder's Map, the Deluminator, Sirius Black's enchanted Motorbike and Hermione's handbag because they'd be unlikely to show up in the Room of Requirement, I finally decided on:

A Long Lost Time Turner

Possibly owned by one of the Founders, and stowed away in mysterious circumstances...The Time Turner would allow me to send myself to Hogwarts and follow ALL of the classes.  And then, once I'm a proper witch, I'd use it to find The Doctor.

Top Ten Books I Wouldn't Mind Santa Leaving Under My Tree This Year

The Name of the Wind - As an epic fantasy lover, it's high time that I introduce myself to Patrick Rothfuss. This sounds like such a 'me' book...and if the GR rating for this one is any indication, I'll kick myself for not reading it sooner.

The Aeronaut's Windlass - Another glaring omission in my sci-fi/fantasy repertoire, is Jim Butcher. Either Storm Front or The Aeronaut's Windlass would do Santa, as I do need to read both and finally see what the fuss is all about.

Harry Potter Colouring Book - Naturally, as it is with all things Harry Potter, I must have this. I love colouring books and I'm really getting a kick out of this new 'adult colouring book' trend. The art on this one looks fabulous too, I can't wait to put my crayons to these pages!

Red Rising - I've heard way too much praise about this one to ignore it any longer - I need this to be under my tree Santa. Oh and please let Faith know as soon as you do, it should make her quite happy ;)

The Last Ever After - I loved this series so far but I've yet to get my hands on the finale. It was listed as being at BEA, (like the previous two) but instead they were just handing out posters (womp womp)

My Soul to Take - My ignorance of this series - and this author has gone on long enough. I have a reputation at stake here Santa! Help a book nerd out?

Something Strange and Deadly - Now that I've read Truthwitch, I'm eager to read more Susan Dennard. I didn't think I'd like this series when it first came out, but I've since changed my mind. Bring on the zombies, Santa!

Old Man's War - I'm on a classic fantasy/sci-fi kick this year Santa, what can I say?! Old Man's War is another one of the glaring gaps in my bookish knowledge that I need to take care of.

Firefight - As an obvious Sanderson fangirl it seems wrong that I still haven't read Firefight.  Even though I prefer his adult fantasies, I really enjoyed Steelheart so Firefight would be appreciated :)

Doctor Who Colouring Book - Yup. Another colouring book. Bring on ALL the fandom colouring books, for I shall colour them ALL. Allons-y!

Fandom Mashup #32

Fandom Mashups
Fandom Mashups is an original feature here at Lunar Rainbows Reviews.  The idea is that every week, I propose a unique fictional scenario and then build my personal dream team of five fictional characters from five different fandoms to complete the task!  Anyone is welcome to join in on the fandom fun - all I ask is that you link back to me somewhere in your post :)

Hellllloooooo Fandom people! How is everyone doing?  I'm feeling quite wonderful actually - yesterday was our staff Christmas Party so we went out to eat and got spoiled a bit.  I also got a long overdue haircut this week and I'm feeling light and free :D Being pampered a bit can really make a difference sometimes! Now, the Holidays are almost upon us so I wanted to do something special here this week :D We have a choice of two topics but knowing me, I'm sure you're not surprised that I went and answered both:

1. With the Holidays fast approaching, you head out for some last minute gifts. Who are you buying gifts for and what are you getting them?

Harry Potter

To my beloved Harry, I would give a Deathly Hallows pendant (like Xenophilius Lovegood's) or keepsake, as a reminder of how he accomplished the impossible and is the only true master of death.  Then I'd show him my DH tattoo and fangirl for a bit XD

Aelin Galathynius

For Aelin, I'd gift a shopping spree with all of her best friends.  She's been so busy with saving the world and becoming it's queen lately, that she hasn't had time to be pampered like she used to be. I think the nice indulgence would do her a world of good.

Kaladin Stormblessed

Kaladin is another favorite hero of mine and I'd want to give him something that lasts, so I'd gift him with his own story (The Stormlight Archive) - hopefully told by Wit - by the fireside with all of Bridge Four gathered round.

Katniss Everdeen

To Katniss, I would gift a new Mockingjay pin, along with portraits of Prim, Cinna, her Father and Finnick. Afterwards we'd sit, have some tea, chat and probably have a good cry...the poor girl went through so much, so quickly, I have a feeling this would do her a world of good.

Prince Zuko

For Zuko, there can only be one gift: his HONOR! Ahahaha just kidding (sorry Zuko!) kind of. I'd gift Zuko a medal of honor that says 'Not as much of a jerk as you could have been!' and hopefully him and the gAang would have a good laugh at the memory :)

And now we're really going to have some fun making Christmas dreams come true:

2. There are secret santa gifts under the tree. Who do you hope bought you gifts and what do you hope they bought you?

From: Albus Dumbledore

Hogwarts Letter. It's been late for a few years now, but this year, it'll be there so I can FINALLY set off for Hogwarts. Oh, and you guys are all coming too ♥

From: The Doctor

Key to the TARDIS. If I'm to be a companion, I'll be needing my key, thank you very much. Oh and of course, it'll be Nine or Ten offering said key and companionship ;) Or maybe even Eight, I quite liked him and then I'd hang with the War Doctor too and he was brilliant. Followed by Nine and Ten of course. SO MUCH DOCTOR LOVE!

Key to the Batcave: I'm not saying I want to be Robin - because we all know Robin sucks - but I just want to be like... Batman's Felicity tech girl, or assistant or whatever. Basically I want to hang out in Wayne Manor with Bruce Wayne, but I ALSO want access to all the Batman action.

An invitation to go on an adventure: I've decided what I want to do with the time that's given to me, and it's Hogwarts, TARDIS, Batcave and Middle-Earth...for an adventure WITH Gandalf, hopefully involving dragons and Bilbo or the Shire and Sam) Eeep!  And finally...

A Map: Telling me which Bending Temple to meet him and the rest of the GAng and train up to be a BENDER! :O  YES!   Oh and we can go penguin sledding too, right?
