Waiting on Wednesday *86*

Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by  Breaking the Spine which spotlights upcoming book releases that we're especially looking forward to!

Here's what I'm waiting on this week:

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
Expected Publication: February 10th 2015 by Harper Teen

Mare Barrow's world is divided by blood--those with red and those with silver. Mare and her family are lowly Reds, destined to serve the Silver elite whose supernatural abilities make them nearly gods. Mare steals what she can to help her family survive, but when her best friend is conscripted into the army she gambles everything to win his freedom. A twist of fate leads her to the royal palace itself, where, in front of the king and all his nobles, she discovers a power of her own--an ability she didn't know she had. Except . . . her blood is Red.

To hide this impossibility, the king forces her into the role of a lost Silver princess and betroths her to one of his own sons. As Mare is drawn further into the Silver world, she risks her new position to aid the Scarlet Guard--the leaders of a Red rebellion. Her actions put into motion a deadly and violent dance, pitting prince against prince--and Mare against her own heart.
Supernatural abilities, class struggles, nobility, deceit, betrayal and war.  Man does Red Queen ever sound EPIC! Sure it sounds like there's a love triangle brewing between the MC and those two princes, but I'm willing to go along for the ride, if at least one of them draws me in. Ideally both! And hopefully the romance will take a backseat to the characters and court intrigue.  All in a mixture of both high fantasy and dystopian setting. So far Red Queen has been compared to a mix of Graceling, Game of Thrones and Divergent.  All I can say is: GIMME GIMME GIMME!

What are your thoughts on Red Queen?

  2. You are absolutely right. Red Queen screams epic to me. I do hope there's not much romantic drama though and it lives up to its potential. Great pick, Micheline!

  3. I'm really excited to read Red Queen as well. It sounds like all kinds of exciting! I hope the romance takes a back-seat too! It would suck if an amazing book got ruined by the love triangle.
    Lovely pick!

  13. Ooh! I've been seeing this one around and already have it on my TBR. I really, really hope that it has a Game of Thrones feel to it!

  14. You know, I hadn't actually read the synopsis for this one yet until just now, after reading your piece. It actually sounds a lot like The Queen of the Tearling, as well. Sort of a Game of Thrones-lite, like that book was. I'm always wary that more important and intriguing elements will be disregarded for romance so I really hope that isn't the case here either!

  15. I'm super excited for this one! I hope the fantasy world is going to be as fully-realized as I think they could make it. This has the potential to be something really special. Thanks for sharing!

  16. I'm so conflicted about how to feel about Red Queennnnnnnnnnn! I'm all "omg yey weird blood/magic/classes" and then "uuuurgh love triangles bleck" and then "yey Graceling comps!" and then "but but but I didn't really love Divergent waaaaaah" so I think I'll see what you think and then buy a pretty hardcover ;-)

This blog is an award-free zone. I appreciate the thought but I can't invest the time needed.
