Harry Potter MotW #43

Harry Potter Moment of the Week

Harry Potter Moment of the Week is a meme hosted over at Uncorked Thoughts. The idea is to share a favorite moment, magical item, character, spell, quote, object from the books, films or J.K.Rowling herself! Upcoming topics & how to join here.

  Favorite Hogwarts Ghost

This is a really interesting topic, as a general rule I kind of love all of the Hogwarts Ghosts.  It's just so cool to me that a bunch of them live at Hogwarts and each house has a specific ghost. It is a bit bittersweet of course when you think of how they chose to stay behind and not...go on, but I've still always really enjoyed their presence throughout the books.  I've always been partial to Nearly Headless Nick since we get to know him the most and I really like the actor who portrayed him, John Cleese.   I wanted to give him a shout-out because instead I decided on going with:

The Grey Lady

The Grey Lady is the ghost of Ravenclaw (♥) and she remains largely unknown until Deathly Hallows.  I loved finding out about her past, her heartbreak and how she came to hide one of Tom's Horcruxes.  Because of that last bit there, she played a pivotal part in Harry's quest and that makes her very special to me.

More on the Grey Lady:
Helena Ravenclaw (late 10th century — early 11th century), known as the Grey Lady after her death, was a witch and Rowena Ravenclaw's daughter. She attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and was Sorted into Ravenclaw house. At some point, she stole her mother's diadem and ran away to Albania. Rowena became fatally ill, and hoping to see her daughter one last time, sent the Bloody Baron, a man who harboured an unrequited love for Helena, to find her. The Baron killed Helena when she refused to return with him, before killing himself out of regret for what he had done. She and the Baron eventually returned as ghosts to Hogwarts Castle, where Helena became and continues to be the Ghost of Ravenclaw House.-Harry Potter Wikia

  1. I never payed her much attention, and I think that was the whole point! She just came out of the background and became super important, which I really loved, although she seemed a bit cuckoo in the movie.
Too bad her story is such a sad one.

  2. Her life is so absolutely tragic! I love how so many of the ghosts are kind of interrelated and then all live together in this massive castle. I liked that Helena always seemed to keep her distance from everyone but then emerged to be incredibly important. Also, I think she wasn't just important in finding the Horcrux, but I also think that without her, Harry might not have sacrificed himself. Great pick :)

  3. I agree with Ula, I passed over her pretty much through the series on those rare occasions that she was brought up, but she became such an important part of the story. I really enjoyed that we got to see her closer at the end and know more about her as well as the Baron that everyone was afraid of. Jaclyn @ JC's Book Haven.

  4. Awww The Grey Lady! :) I loved her back story. It was so tragic and I would absolutely love to read more about it. Wouldn't it be brilliant if Rowing wrote about what happened between The Bloody Baron and her in Albania? :) Great pick! xx

  5. I loved the way The Grey Lady's story was worked into the series. Like so many other readers, I never gave her a lot of thought until DH, when BAM! She was key to Harry locating the diadem. I'm glad we got a glimpse into her history, as sad as it was.

  6. I also loved how we saw a glimpse of her past and how she came in possession of one of the Horcruxes :)

  7. Yeah, I've never thought which one was my favourite before, but I think I might go with the Grey Lady, as well, if only because her story fascinated me! Actually, I would be very curious in getting the detailed history of the other ghosts at Hogwarts, as well...

I LOVE comments & do my best to return every one a.s.a.p. ♥
