BEA'13 Recap Post

I can safely say without a shadow of a doubt that having the privilege to attend Book Expo America '13 will go down as one of the best moments of my entire life!  Not just because it was my first time in the U.S. or NYC for that matter, but because like all of us bloggers I love books, reading & writing more than most other things.  So getting the chance to meet with beloved authors, respected publishers and amazing bloggers was really a dream come true for me!  I'm happy to say that BEA'13 was everything I'd hoped for and more :D

So for starters, this small town girl has never been to a city bigger than Montreal, Québec so being able to visit an iconic and massive metropolis like New York was such a treat!!  Here's what we got up to on the first night in the big city: Times Square!!

Times Square: got to see a Storm Trooper & Vader - I caught the attention of a Trooper but I was really after Vader ;)
Rocking it live from Times Square w. Giselle (Xpresso Reads) & Kara (Great Imaginations)

Then, we were up bright and early in the morning for day one of BEA:
Press Pass - totally official

Then we were off to the Harlequin Teen Blogger Breakfast with Elizabeth Scott, Julie Kagawa, Katie McGarry & Amanda Sun. They did a round table where each author/publicist would sit down at our table for 5 minutes and we could chat them up! It was pretty amazing but way too early for my brain to think up of questions I'd have liked to ask o_O

Then we headed to the YA Buzz Panel (sorry no pics!) where we got the inside scoop on some hot upcoming YA titles.

As for BEA itself it was truly incredible!  I was worried beforehand that it would be too intense and crazy (and believe me it was!) but in the BEST way possible!  The setup at the Javits Center was easy to figure out and that place is HUGE so there were more than enough room for all us crazy book-lovers!  The staff was incredibly helpful and kind and we could always find some help when we needed it; either at the suitcase check-in, information desk and autograph line attendants!  Some of the staff were even walking around the entire floor with ''May I Help You?" signs!  -->

Shake My Jugs! bahaha
There was many snacking & meal possibilities complete with completely raw & organic juices which I wish me had up here in Canada!  There were Starbucks stands - which were crazy busy in the mornings (book junkies need their caffeine fix!) and little newsstands with souvenirs & other fun stuff :D  The lines were always long but most of the time, we were served and able to pay pretty quickly considering.  Shout out to BEA'13 for thinking of everything they did and truly making our experience FUN!

**Books & Authors (EEEEK!!)  What had me in various states of fan-girl-euphoria  were all the authors I idolize - *ahem* Brandon Sanderson! *passes out*  I literally wanted to do a cartwheel wheel after meeting him, first when he signed Steelheart (a.k.a THE PRECIOUS!) and was kind enough to ask each of us if we had a question for him *dies*  Then I got to meet him again the next day when he was signing copies of The Rithmatist (another coveted one)

It was a thrill and an honor to meet Julie Kagawa, Maria V. Snyder and Dan Krokos - who said he loved my name and asked if he could use it in a book (O.O)  Sadly no author pics - it was pretty hectic in there PLUS my mind went out the window the minute I got in range of those inspirational authors...
It wouldn't have been complete to me without some Harry Potter item, and we got lucky because BEA'13 was the official unveiling for  the 15th anniversary release of Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone:
Depicting a classic scene from this book ♥
One of the absolute best parts was meeting up & hanging out with  so many amazing blogger friends!!  Shout out to Giselle of Xpresso Reads (for bringing me along and all the laughs along the way!) Mandee of Vegan YA Nerds, Nori of Nori's Closet, Asher of Paranormal Indulgence, Kellie of SnarkyBooks, Briana of BAM Book Reviews, Kara of Great Imaginations, Christina of A Reader of Fictions, Steph of Cuddlebuggery, Jamie of Perpetual Page Turner/Broke & Bookish, Tara of Hobbitsies, Gabriella of Queen Ella Bee Reads and Emily of On Emily's Bookshelf and everyone else who I met but didn't exchange business cards with and have now forgotten your names >.<

Meeting Nori- left (Nori's Closet)    &    Kara-right (Great Imaginations)

I'm the one taking the picture!! Meeting Asher (Paranormal Indulgence), Mandee (VeganYANerds) & Tara (Hobbitsies)

And finally after the last & memorable day at BEA, we got to do the touristic thing again - me, Giselle & our mama's went out to Central Park, the How I Met Your Mother Pub & Times Square.  I absolutely had to see the Imagine/John Lennon Memorial in Central Park but we got to walk up to the tragic place where he died and pay our respects.  I was really moved by the entire experience ♥ R.I.P. John Lennon.  McGee's is the name of the pub which MacLaren's in based on on How I Met Your Mother - it was brilliant!  There were pics of the entire cast all over and they apparently all get together there once a year for a cast party!!  The food was GREAT.

Soooo...yeah, BEA'13 + NYC was an mind-blowingly EPIC experience!!  We were already discussing returning to do it all over again  next year on the car drive back!  I hope you enjoyed reading my recap post as much as I enjoyed living it and writing it up afterwards but I doubt it bahaha  Anyways let me know your thoughts on the whole thing in the comments below - and hope to see even more of you for BEA'14 :D

**Stay tuned for my book-haul post, which will go up on Saturday as part of Stacking the Shelves**

  1. Whoa! That's a big crowd. Great to see you had a blast and plan to return for 2014 :)

    1. hahah yeah, it was madness! Thanks so much :D

  2. *squee* I love this post! So awesome that you got to go and meet so many amazing bloggers and authors! I know how much you love Brandon Sanderson's books and if it was me with one of my favorite authors I probably would've said all the embarrassing things ^^'' Or nothing at all.
Also, Julie Kagawa and Katie McGarry! And Dan Krokos wants to name a character after you! I mean asdklghsd o.O
I love the pictures you took around the city! What an awesome adventure for you and Giselle :)
I really wish I could go next year and there actually *is* a slight possibility because my sister and I are planning a big US road trip thing next summer... *fingers crossed* I'm hoping the dates of BEA and the NYC part of the trip can somehow be made to align. Because if you're going again we could actually meet!

    1. YAY, thanks Carmen :D Yeah it was a struggle to even speak coherently when it came to Sanderson, but he was really friendly so that helped!

You're right it was such an amazing adventure & I was glad I had Giselle to share it with!! Carmen, I WOULD DIE if you actually ended up going - I WOULD LOVE to meet you!!! Eeek, next year BEA is May 29th-31st so I'm already crossing my fingers for our timing to work out LOL ♥ Thanks for the awesome comment!

    2. I'd love to meet you too!!! But late May could be difficult because of when my and my sister's school terms end and because I'll be taking my MA final :/ But sometimes the term ends in the last week of May... God I hope I can find a way to make this work!!! It would be epic! :D

  3. aww, this looked like so much fun!!! I would have loved to see the books you got but seeing your experience is also awesome.

  6. Bahaha you put the Shake my Jugs picture! LOL.

I'M so happy that you came along it wouldn't have been as much fun without you as a partner! :D I'm already SOOO excited for next year's and it will be even better since we won't deal with suck ass NJ and we can actually attend after parties and such! Also next year we'll ask strangers to take pictures instead so we can both be in some! I suck at taking pictures I should have caught more of you. Next year I'm bringing my actually camera!

  7. So exciting!! I'm glad you shared your BEA experience!! It looks like you and Giselle had a BLAST! I hope I can attend someday!

  8. Micheline!! I am so happy we got to meet and spend some time together at BEA - love the photo you took :)

And I'm so jealous that you went to the John Lennon memorial and to the HIMYM pub - I planned on doing that but my blisters held me back. Your photos made me smile and I'm glad you got to go!

  9. AHHHHHH, MICHELINE!! This is all so exciting. Okay first off, isn't NYC amazing?! I've been there three times now (I'm a bit of a Broadway musical junkie) and there's always so SO much to see and never enough time to see it all. Hopefully you'll get to see some more of the city (the Imagine is Central Park is also one of my fave spots) when you return to BEA next year! Second off, I'm so happy for you that it sounds like you had an amazing time at BEA! All the authors and bloggers you got to meet! I think I also spotted you in a video montage that Asher from Paranormal Indulgence put up. I also love your name and agree it should be in a book!! Nice pictures and thanks for sharing, pretty girl!

    1. My fault, that I didn't add a mention to her because I COULDN'T FIND HER DAMN BUSINESS CARD. But I'm so happy to have met you, Micheline!! You were one of those really cool people who help make the line feel so much faster by being so interesting and fun to talk to! I'm so happy I met you on that Maria V. Snyder line, otherwise I not only would've been bored out of my mind but I would've missed out on meeting another fabulous blogger <3 <3
