Waiting on Wednesday *29*

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly  hump-day  feature hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine where us book bloggers get together & spotlight an upcoming release we're especially looking forward to!

Here's my pick for this week:

Born of Illusion

Release Date: June 11th 2013

Author: Teri Brown

Anna Van Housen is thirteen the first time she breaks her mother out of jail. By sixteen she’s street smart and savvy, assisting her mother, the renowned medium Marguerite Van Housen, in her stage show and séances, and easily navigating the underground world of magicians, mediums and mentalists in 1920’s New York City. Handcuffs and sleight of hand illusions have never been much of a challenge for Anna. The real trick is keeping her true gifts secret from her opportunistic mother, who will stop at nothing to gain her ambition of becoming the most famous medium who ever lived. But when a strange, serious young man moves into the flat downstairs, introducing her to a secret society that studies people with gifts like hers, he threatens to reveal the secrets Anna has fought so hard to keep, forcing her to face the truth about her past. Could the stories her mother has told her really be true? Could she really be the illegitimate daughter of the greatest magician of all?
I'm just going to come out and say it: I love every single detail about this book and I am REALLY hoping what's inside will compare!  The title is awesome - I just love that...Born of Illusion...it sounds so promising!  The cover is pretty darn stunning too but then that synopsis is where it really gets juicy for me: New York in the 1920's seems like the perfect setting to explore an underworld of mediums, magicians and mentalists (m,m,m...) where a resourceful young girl works séances and navigates secret societies  - am I drooling?-   all while covering up a mysterious 'special gift' or power.  Gah, can I have this in my hands...now?!  Please!?

PS- I seem to be on some kind of a Paranormal/Historical/Steampunk kick huh??  I just can't seem to stay away, but I am going switch it up next week  ;)

So what do you guys think of my pick this week?
And link me up, I want to see what everyone else picked!!

  8. The way you're describing the genre (steampunk/paranormal/historical) is making me think of THE DIVINERS by Libba Bray, which is set in the 20s too, and has mystery thrown in XD

Anyway, I'm really excited about this too!

  18. Yes, I agree. There is just so much goodness here and that is sort of worrying because I am nervous it might not live up to my extremely high expectations. It actually sounds a lot like The Diviners by Libba Bray. Not that I've read that one (unfortunately... it sounds pretty incredible).
