Magical Me *1* - New Feature!

Magical Me is a new Lunar Rainbows feature I've decided to launch!  Every month I will feature a favorite magical theme or element from books - anything from awesome magical systems, favorite spells, magical items, best enchanted worlds...
I thought it would be fun to discuss & share the magic :)  If anyone would like to join, you're welcome to whip up a post - all I ask is that you link back to me in some way - I've added a linky-link to the bottom if anyone's interested.

For my first ever Magical Me post, I've decided to spotlight :the Maurauder's Map from the Harry Potter books & films!  As the inaugrual post, I felt it was only right to pick something out of the Harry Potter books, since - as some of you hardcore Potter fans might have noticed,  this feature title owes it's name to J.K's genius ;)
The Maurauder's Map
*There will be some minor spoilers but nothing major, especially if you've read or seen the first 3 books or films*

Can we take a moment and thank the almighty J.K.Rowling for inventing the Maurauder's Map?!  It's cool, practical, a little bit naughty...but if you make up for it by thwarting evil & saving innocent lives it totally balances out.
Harry using the Map
The Maurauder's Map is an enchanted or charmed map that features the entire Hogwarts School & grounds, including any secret passages and *most* sealed of rooms.  It also happens to show the owner where everyone in the school is at any given moment.  Including the old headmaster Albus Dumbledore - who can often be spotted pacing in his office!
Dumbledore pacing in his office as seen on the map
I love that the Maurauders are the ones responsible for it's existence to begin with.  That little detail just made me so happy in Prisoner of Azkaban and honestly, I think I enjoyed PoA all the more because of the inclusion of the Map as a plot device. I have fun imagining what mischief they were able to get away with because of it - and how much laughs they would have shared afterwards because of it :D  And if that isn't enough to put a smile on your face, the map was then inherited by the Weasley Twins!! It made them legends at Hogwarts & it certainly must have gotten them in trouble a time or two!

I solemly swear that I am up to no good...
And then, rightfully so - it was inherited by Harry himself, and he probably made the best use out of it so far! I can only imagine what it meant to him to inherit it (when he found out it's origin)  That map is such in integral part of the plot & of Harry's character that it deserves recognition as one of the best magical inventions ever thought up of!

Harry with the map
Attending Hogwarts at all would be a dream come true, but attending AND having the Maurauder's Map in your possession sounds like just about the coolest thing I can think of!  What about you guys?  Are you still fascinated with the Map like me?  What's the first thing you'd do with the map?  Sneak out to Hogsmeade?  Spy on your crush or your arch-nemesis?  Keep an eye out on teachers so you can really cause some trouble? Let me know in the comments below :)

  1. Ooh, I love this feature! I would definitely check out that secret passageway that leads straight into Honeydukes's cellar because I've always wondered what it would be like to be surrounded by that much candy!

    1. Thanks Lee :D That secret passageway would be a high priority quest for me too, Honeyduke's is just too tempting to pass up!!

  2. Oh YAY, Micheline!! Another brilliant idea for a feature! I bet you could have a ton of fun with this one. I mean, just with HP alone, there are a TON of magical items that are so amazingly cool and that I would love to own. The Marauder's Map is right up there at the top. I love the idea of it and I love its history, too. I almost bought a copy of The Marauder's Map when I was at the HP Exhibition in New York, but my more frugal side shut me down. I do still have the one that comes with the copy of Harry Potter: Film Wizardry though and I love to take it out and look at it and imagine all the mischief I could get up to if it was actually functioning! Not sure what exactly I would use it for, but guaranteed it would not be super honourable, haha

    1. Thanks Aylee!! I went a bit old school for this one but I'll have current topics too :D But like you said, there are so many more HP related ones to chose from too!! I actually got an authentic replica (via the WB online shop) from the BF a few Xmases ago! I wish they'd put SOME people on there...even if they wouldn't move like they ought to it would have been cool! I'd definitely just use it to explore every single aspect of Hogwarts, top to bottom :D haha and no I wouldn't always use it honourably either!!

  4. I love the map, and thought it was such a unique piece. I purchased a book for my daughter and it had the map in it, when my daughter first received it, she was so excited but then she was kind of upset that it didn't really work! Ah, the minds of eight yr. olds and adults like ourselves, who will be Potter fans for LIFE!

    1. It's so incredibly unique, you're right Lisa!! I think that's what makes it even more awesome! The bf got my a replica map a few Xmases ago and I have to say I was kind of wishing it would have really worked too! They could have at least put 'unmoving' people on there XD Anyways, tell your daughter I feel her pain LOL

  5. This is such a neat feature! I have to admit that I have never read the Potter books nor have I ever sat down and really paid attention to the movies. My husband loved the movies and watched them all while I was around but they just never interested me. This map thing sounds so cool though! I solemly swear that I am up to no good! Love it! Great new feature!

  7. I would find a way to get away with the mischief I have always been afraid to do, for fear of getting caught. I would say I am more Hermione-ish than Harry or Ron.

    1. Oh I forgot to say this is a GREAT IDEA! I love LOVE LoVE the world of HP and the world J K ROWLING created! I don't even have children so I took a while to catch on. She is a terrific writer and this is a nice way to continue to give her the honor she deserves!

    2. Thanks so much Christine!! I don't have any kids either so I was a bit late myself but all that matters is that we discovered the story...AND the map :D

      ps- I think I'm quite Hermione-ish myself ;) hehe
